Sony Announces A New PlayStation 5 VR Headset

Sony today announced that it has a new next-generation VR headset on the way, designed specifically for the PS5.

The announcement came today with few details, but we do know that it won’t be ready to ship at any point this year. We do know that the new headset will include an improved field of view when compared with the previous PS4 generation, however.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

Sony’s Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management, also said that the company is working on a new VR controller that it is particularly proud of. Again, few details were forthcoming but anything that means the death of the controllers we deal with now is fine by us.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

We obviously don’t know when the new headset and controller will be available, but the fact it won’t ship this year suggests there is plenty to go at for Sony’s developers and engineers. We can’t wait to see what they’ve been working on!
