PlayStation 5 Announcement And Release Date Rumored In New Report

An anonymous source has suggested that Japan-based Sony will host an event titled ‘PlayStation Meeting 2020’ on February 12th, 2020.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out the purpose of that event from what is presumably a work-in-progress title but it does give us something to look forward to from a next-generation console perspective.

Sony and Microsoft have both shot their shot as far as confirming that their next-generation consoles are already underway. The prying tech community has been privy to snippets of information and conjecture about both of these consoles but thus far there has been no solid leaks or official information from either of the companies forthcoming relating to features, price, release date, or even what the consoles will be called.

If this anonymous source is accurate, then it looks like we still have a few months to wait until we get something concrete. At least from Sony.

The source is suggesting that the information pertaining to the leak has been pulled from an email sent internally to a person of seniority in the marketing department within the PlayStation arm of Sony. There has been no speculation on the intricate details of the event but we can surmise that Sony would take the opportunity to give the world its first official glimpse of the PlayStation 5 as well as an overview of its capabilities and performance.

It’s fairly standard to also get a look at what type of games and content will be available for the platform, with the leak also suggesting that a number of high-profile publishers will be in attendance, including Activation, Ubisoft, EA, and Square Enix.

Interestingly, the current-generation PlayStation 4 console was introduced to the market on a similar date in 2013 (yes, it was that long ago), which adds some credibility to the speculated date. Whether or not Sony can keep everything it wants to under wraps before then is another conversation entirely. It will also be extremely interesting to see if Microsoft will react to that news and pencil in an event for Project Scarlett prior to Sony’s gathering in order to ensure focus is well and truly on the next-generation Xbox console.

As always, as things progress we will be sure to bring you the latest and most up to date information.
