One of the announcements to come out of today's event opening is the news that a new version of Visual Studio along with .NET Framwork is on the cards. Unimaginatively named Visual Studio 2013, the updated software may not yet be ready for primetime but that hasn't stopped Microsoft by making a developer preview of the said tool available for download immediately.
Flipboard and Facebook are two platforms, if not apps, that don’t need any introduction. While Facebook has been around for more than a while and has a far larger footprint in the digital world than anything else, Flipboard debuted on iOS and redefined the concept of a social news reader, expanding later on into Android and other popular platforms. Now, it seems that both of these are officially making way into the Windows 8 sphere as well, where both the apps were showcased today at BUILD 2013, right beside the Windows 8.1 Preview download announcement.
With Apple's iOS 7 having recently reached the milestone of a second beta release, all the talk has been about those new icons, or the fancy parallax effect that sits behind them. Not much, if any discussion has been taking place about what iOS 7 will offer to those in the business arena. Apple now seeks to change that.
Ahh, 2010. It feels so long ago doesn't it? Well it will do when we remind you that 2010 was the year of the infamous iPhone 4 found-in-a-bar shenanigans that led to all kinds of headlines the world over.
The dramatic overhaul that comes in the form of iOS 7 beta has definitely received split opinion. Adding Control Center to the in-beta iOS means that users can now quickly access commonly used system toggles from anywhere, which is an extremely handy option to have. However, it isn't just iOS users who get the quick access treatment, with Mac users now able to have a similar setup thanks to the third-party Fast Toggles set of utilities. More details and download link can be found right after the break.
Yesterday, Apple seeded iOS 7 beta 2 to developers. The biggest news to come out of this release was the addition of iPad support, for which we've already done a full video overview, however there was also a plethora of smaller additions into the betas for iPod touch and iPhone.
Mozilla has just dropped version number 22 of its popular Firefox browser and with it, brought a whole host of new and exciting features. Included in this release is support 3D gaming, video calls, and file sharing, affording developers enhanced compatibility with less requirement for plugins and other unnecessary third-party installations. Further details, as well as information on how you can get the latest version of Firefox, are coming up right after the break!
Apps are wondrous little inventions, allowing us to increase productivity yet procrastinate heavily in one fell swoop. If you're looking for something to kill a lot of time, you've probably already been captured by the hopelessly addictive Candy Crush Saga, but if you are on the hunt for an app to help you out from day to day, a new app called HEARD certainly could pique your interest. In essence, it records sounds around you, allowing you to playback sounds and as such, recall details you might have missed from important conversations, such as instructions from your boss or the passcode you discussed with somebody and ought to have jotted down.
The behavior of iOS 7 beta after a screenshot is taken differs significantly from what we've seen hitherto, with active screen touches "no longer canceled when the user takes a screenshot." This, for services like the popular Snapchat, means that the in-built screenshot detection is essentially nullified, and with this being an integral part of that and the likes of Facebook Poke, the security offered by said applications is under serious threat.
The App Store and Google Play are becoming, if not already, major players in the gaming world. Most big new titles have some form of mobile game for those on iOS and Android, but a couple of big names have yet to fully embrace this smartphone and tablet boom.
