With iOS 7 just weeks away from release, much of the discussion has surrounded what developers will do with their own apps and how they will redesign their interfaces. As all eyes are on the developer community, it was almost forgotten that Apple too would need to update its own iOS apps to reflect the new interface that goes along with iOS 7.
Late last month, MoDaCo.Switch for HTC One was released, allowing owners of the device to readily flit between Sense and stock-based ROMs on the exact same device. Now, the developers have brought forth a corresponding version for the Galaxy S4, adding more diversity to the already very powerful Android handset. So, if you like the idea of having both untouched Android and Samsung's TouchWiz-ified version at your disposal, then check out the details after the break.
Gameloft has taken to the mobile industry like a duck to water, and with a wide range of different titles available for both iOS and Android, the company has built a solid reputation for high-end, graphically-intensive fare. Asphalt, a nitrous-charged racing game, has been a staple part of the company's range for a number of years, and today, the company has released Asphalt 8: Airborne for both iOS and Android. In addition, the Paris, France-based developer has revealed that the game will soon be arriving for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, while also outlining its intention to port a multitude of titles over to Microsoft's fledgling platforms.
Microsoft's Windows Phone platform continues to struggle against the might of both iOS and Android in the battle of the mobile ecosystems, and while the UI and functionality of the Redmond company's mobile software has been praised and lauded by many - including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak - the lack of apps over at the Windows Phone Store has been more than a slight problem. While one app certainly won't be enough to completely change the fortunes of the still fledgling platform, an official Instagram app for Windows Phone has been conspicuous by its absence, and while there's still no sign of the Facebook-owned product making its way to the tiled interface, a third-party offering by the name of 6tag finally offers an almost fully-functional Instagram experience.
There has never been a better time to be a gaming console fan as we move closer towards the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release. Excitement levels were once again raised through the roof with the recent confirmation of the PS4 release date in Europe and the US. Not wanting to let adrenaline and interest die down at this early stage, the PS4 announcement train is back, this time to inform us that we will be stepping away from the single option of black monotone controllers in favor of offering stunning red and blue variants that will surely be popular with those who want to inject a bit of personality into their gaming.
As we move closer to the speculated next-generation iPhone announcement, we are seeing additional leaked images that claim to prove the existence of the champagne / gold iPhone 5S. Over the last seven days we have been hearing murmurings about whether or not Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5S in a variety of colors, with most of the attention being lavished on the purported gold - or champagne - variant of the new device. Whether or not that will actually happen is still up in the air, but the latest leaked images to come from Japanese sources show the purported gold / champagne colored hardware sitting alongside a black and white version of the current iPhone 5.
Google's $35 Chromecast dongle has scarcely been out of the headlines since its release, and although it is rather limited in what it can currently offer, this hasn't prevented developers and general Android enthusiasts from pushing the boundaries in trying to improve the service. Dev Leon Nicholls is one such individual, and his new Fling app allows Chromecast owners to stream a variety of video formats from their PC or Mac straight to the device.
As smartphones have continued to advance over the past few years, so too has the quality of displays, and with visible pixels quickly becoming a distant memory, LG Electronics has just shown off a 5.5 inch display boasting an incredible 2560 x 1440 resolution. This places it alongside the Apple Thunderbolt display in terms sheer number of pixels, and considering how much smaller this new panel is from LG, one cannot even begin to decipher how crisp the aptly named Quad HD LCD panel would be on a phablet.
Although it seems, in lieu of an official confirmation from Apple, as though the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be announced on September 10th at a special event, the date from which consumers will be able to get their paws on the new handsets is a little less cut-and-dried. Some have suggested a two-week wait, while other sources have indicated delays pushing the retail date well into October. Today, Japanese publication Nikkei has claimed that the devices will launch in Japan on 20th September, a mere ten days after the anticipated announcement.
Microsoft has dominated the headlines over the past couple of weeks with its very public preparations for the launch of the Xbox One. But the present days are all about Sony and the PlayStation 4, though, and as well as announcing the PS4 release date, the Japanese company has taken the opportunity at Cologne-based Gamescom to announce some interesting news regarding the all-important initial titles. There will be no fewer than 33 games available for the next-gen machine by the year's close, and although the sum total doesn't quite match the number of titles available for the Xbox One, there's still plenty of variety therein.
