iPhone 12 Chassis Leaks Show Circular Array Of Magnets Suggesting Official Wireless Charging Accessory On Way

Apple is now expected to release the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro in October rather than the usual September timeframe, but when they do arrive, they might have some new magnets inside.

Images shared on Twitter show what seems to be a circular pattern of magnets that will reportedly sit inside the new iPhones.

Those magnets – all 36 of them – are set to form a circle around the center of the iPhone, likely where the Apple logo will live. It’s obviously open for debate as to what those magnets are for but there are a couple of possibilities.

The first is that these magnets will be used in a similar way to an iPad, allowing a case to attach to the back of it rather than clip around it. But that seems less likely, especially considering how easily such a case would be pushed or pulled off inside a pocket. That brings us to the second option.

It’s instead more likely that these magnets will be used for some form of charging accessory. Apple has an on-off history of working on the AirPower charging mat and it’s possible these magnets will be used to make sure an iPhone sits in just the right place to charge.

It also appears that the Apple cases will have the same magnets built into them, suggesting the second option – making sure iPhones are in the right place for optimal charging – is the most likely.

As if the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro weren’t already exciting enough!
