Facebook Announces The End Of Nearby Friends And Weather Alerts

Facebook is canceling its Nearby Friends and Weather Alert features after May 31, a move that it has already warned users about over the last day or two.

According to multiple reports including one from 9to5Mac, Facebook has been setting notifications to people to warn them that the Nearby Friends and Weather Alert features will be disabled from the beginning of next month.

This will also see Location History and Background Location data ceasing to be collected from the same day.

Nearby Friends and Weather alerts will no longer be available after May 31, 2022. Information you shared that was used for these experiences, including Location History and Background Location, will stop being collected after May 31, 2022, even if you have previously enabled them.

Facebook does say that those who want to get their hands on their location data will be able to download it through until August 1, 2022.

It also confirmed that this move doesn’t mean that it will no longer be tracking location data at all, with such data still of use to the company and, more importantly, its advertisers. In a statement to multiple outlets, Facebook said that location data will be collected “for other experiences.”

Facebook isn’t saying why it has made the decision to cancel these two particular features.
