Bloomberg: Apple Is Working On An Apple TV And HomePod Hybrid With FaceTime Camera

Apple is working on a new Apple TV product that also features a smart speaker similar to the HomePod, according to a new report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg.

The new device would also feature a FaceTime camera for video calling, with images appearing on a connected TV, the report goes on to say.

There’s no indication of when, or if, this product will ever ship however with Gurman saying that features are subject to change before anything launches.

The company is working on a product that would combine an ‌Apple TV‌ set-top box with a ‌HomePod‌ speaker and include a camera for video conferencing through a connected TV and other smart-home functions, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.

The device’s other capabilities would include standard ‌Apple TV‌ box functions like watching video and gaming plus smart speaker uses such as playing music and using Apple’s Siri digital assistant.

Apple is already rumored to have a new Apple TV on the horizon, but it isn’t expected to be anything like the product Gurman describes here. This news also comes following Apple’s decision to cancel the original HomePod due to poor sales, thanks in part to its relatively high asking price compared to other competing products.

Apple is also rumored to be working on a HomePod-like device that also has a screen attached via a robotic arm, similar to one already offered by Amazon’s Echo line.
