Apple’s Rumored iPhone 12 MagSafe Battery Pack Could Offer Reverse Charging

Apple is said to be working on some sort of MagSafe battery pack that will connect to the back of the latest iPhone 12 series via magnets.

And according to leaker Jon Prosser via the Genius Bar podcast at least one type of battery pack will also support reverse charging.

Prosser says that there are two different versions of the MagSafe battery pack currently being tested by Apple. One of them is a more traditional wireless charging battery pack like we might expect, although the other will be a more capable offering complete with reverse charging.

Unfortunately, Prosser doesn’t go into details about what such a reverse charging feature could mean here. However, the most likely use of the feature would mean that the charger would be able to power both an iPhone and AirPods at the same time.

Reverse charging is also something that has been rumored to come to the iPhone over the last year or so, although it didn’t happen with iPhone 12 on October 2020. In that instance, a reverse charging feature would allow an iPhone to wirelessly charge AirPods itself, something that Android phones are already able to do thanks to a similar feature.

Whether or not Prosser is on the money with this one, it’s clear that Apple is indeed working on a MagSafe battery pack of some sort. Mentions of it were discovered in recent iOS 14.5 betas, for example.
