Apple’s massive iPhone 12 Pro Max has been named one of the best smartphones of the year after Consumer Reports published its latest breakdown. In fact, the same report has the iPhone 12 Pro Max as the “best iPhone” to buy ahead of the smaller iPhone 12 Pro and the rest of the iPhone lineup.

Most notable about this is the fact that Consumer Reports doesn’t tend to approve of Apple’s highest-end iPhones, instead preferring to steer consumers to something a little less costly.

However, in terms of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, Consumer Reports believes that the extra $100 over the iPhone 12 Pro is money well spent. That despite the fact it is also larger and heavier.

While the 12 Pro Max will cost you $100 more than its smaller sibling, the 12 Pro, it packs in several more hours of battery life, a slightly larger display, and a 2.5x zoom camera that gets you just a hair closer to the action than the 12 Pro’s 2x camera.

On the flip side, the Max version is significantly heavier and can be tough to use one-handed, even for people with long fingers. If you’re wary of bulky phones, you might be happier with the 12 Pro.

Another interesting tidbit is the fact Consumer Reports ranks the iPhone 11 Pro higher than the iPhone 12 Pro, likely due to the cost situation. The iPhone 12 mini is also ranked above the iPhone 12, despite the former’s lackluster sales.
