Apple Launches AirPods Pro With USB-C Case, $29 USB-C To Lightning Adapter

All of the rumors were true — the iPhone is going USB-C, but it isn’t alone. Alongside the USB-C iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, Apple has also confirmed that it is now launching a new USB-C-powered pair of AirPods Pro 2 as well.

The new AirPods Pro 2 are the same second-generation model that is already on sale, but where there was previously a Lightning connector on the bottom, Apple is now switching that out for USB-C.

The new earbuds will sell for the same $249 asking price when they go on sale on Friday, September 22.

Interestingly, this also means that you can now charge your AirPods Pro via the iPhone 15 / 15 Pro as well.

As you might imagine, the switch from Lightning to USB-C could cause some iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro buyers an issue, especially if they have a lot of cables or accessories already. Apple is now selling a $29 dongle that will turn Lightning accessories into USB-C ones.

The USB-C to Lightning Adapter lets you connect your Lightning accessories to a USB-C-enabled iPhone or iPad to conveniently provide three key functions — charging, data and audio — with a single adapter. This adapter has a braided cable for added durability.

Apple says the new dongle will work for both data and charging, and the braided construction should ensure that it will work for longer. As well it should — $29 seems like a lot, especially when there are likely to be plenty of third-party alternatives that cost a fraction of that price.

The new USB-C to Lightning adapter is available to buy online today and will surely be in Apple Stores soon enough.
