Apple Is Bringing RCS Support To The iPhone In 2024

Apple has announced that it is bringing RCS messaging support to the iPhone for the first time starting in 2024.

The feature will allow iPhone owners to enjoy rich messaging features with those who have Android phones with RCS working in much the same way as iMessage.

However, it’s important to remember that this is not iMessage coming to the Android platform but rather Android’s RCS coming to the iPhone — although RCS is a standard rather than specific to Google or any Android OEM.

In a statement given to media, Apple confirmed that it will add RCS via a software update.

Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe the RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.

There are still many questions about how RCS support on the iPhone will work, but we do know that it will enable iPhone users to send and receive high-resolution videos and photos with Android owners without using third-party platforms like WhatsApp, for example. It could also mean that having an Android user in a group chat no longer means missing out on rich messaging features, too.

Apple hasn’t said exactly when the new feature will go live, but we can hope that we will learn more sooner rather than later.
