Apple today announced an all-new iPad Air that arguably puts the 11-inch iPad Pro on notice. The new iPad Air comes complete with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, thin bezels, and no Home button.

That doesn’t mean that it has Face ID, though. Instead, Apple has built Touch ID right into the device’s Top button. That’s the sleep and wake button to most of us, and it’s the first time Apple has done something like this with any device.

It’s also likely a hint that we could see Touch ID come back to the iPhone in this form, too,

Another notable point here is the arrival of the Apple A14 Bionic chip, making this the fastest iPad Apple makes in terms of raw processing power. Again, where that leaves the iPad Pro isn’t really clear.

One thing we do know is that the iPad Air now comes in five colors, with a new rose gold, green, and blue color added to the Space Gray and Silver colors we’re familiar with.

“Today we’re excited to introduce a completely redesigned and far more powerful iPad Air, debuting Apple’s most powerful chip ever made, the A14 Bionic,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With its gorgeous new all-screen design, larger 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, next-generation Touch ID, and a massive boost in performance with A14 Bionic, the new iPad Air brings customers powerful pro features at an even more affordable price. Along with major upgrades to the iPad Pro and eighth-generation iPad this year, and the powerful new features of iPadOS 14, this is our strongest iPad lineup ever, giving our customers even more ways to enrich their daily lives.”

Charging is handled via USB-C, and wireless connectivity comes in the form of WiFi 6 compatibility.

The new tablet supports the Apple Pencil as you might expect, but it won’t come cheap. The new iPad Air will be available for order from next month, and starts at $599 for the Wi-Fi model in shades of Silver, Space Gray, Rose Gold, Green, and Sky Blue.
