WhatsApp Now Supports Video Sharing In High Resolution

If you’re a heavy WhatsApp user you’re probably already well aware that sending and receiving videos is a bit of a problem — because they can look rubbish. That’s all changing, however, and now you can send videos in HD resolution for the first time.

The result? Whenever you receive a video that’s sent in the new HD quality it won’t look like it was recorded on a potato anymore.

The new feature effectively sends the new video with less compression so it’ll take longer to send and download, but it’s worth it. WhatsApp also shows you how big the file will be before you send the higher-quality video so that can come in handy if you’re worried about data caps or are on a slow connection.

This HD video feature comes after WhatsApp released a similar one for sending HD photos, 9to5Mac notes.

If you choose Standard Quality, WhatsApp will compress and send the video in 480p resolution. This option can be useful if you’re using a slow internet connection or have limited data. But with the HD Quality option, videos are sent in 720p resolution – which is still much lower than 1080p or 4K but has a much more acceptable quality.

Those who want to send videos with the new HD quality will need to make sure that they’re running the latest version of WhatsApp on their device ahead of time. The app is a free download for iPhone and iPad, of course.
