Jony Ive's secret design studio at Apple will be revealed for the first time on TV this Sunday on CBS' '60 Minutes' show. Here is the inside scoop and teaser.
Apple Watch is perhaps the most awaited product from the Cupertino company after the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with the smartwatch being Apple's first attempt at the market. No surprise that Apple Watch carries the same design philosophy as seen in other Apple products, but Jony Ive - Apple's chief designer - says that designing the smartwatch was more challenging than designing the original iPhone.
Jony Ive is a pivotal member of Apple's executive team, and since the departure and subsequent passing of Steve Jobs, oversees most of the major hardware and software design changes that the company makes. The Englishman, like most of Apple's execs, rarely speaks publicly aside from a recorded clip at most of the keynotes, but in a rare tidbit, discussed the iPhone, the company's impending smartwatch, and how much it irks him to see rivals copying Apple.
Although the company was quite clearly pushed for time, the iPhone 6 / Apple Watch parade on Tuesday seemed to pass without incident. As ever, it was a grand spectacle (unless you happened to be tuning in via Apple TV in certain areas), and after a lengthy period of preparation at the Flint Center in Cupertino, Apple managed to announce its key new products and features inside the usual two-hour limit. The Apple Watch was the real clincher - a product category that the Mac maker has never previously attempted - and if you enjoyed the original unveiling, you can now catch extended backstage coverage in a clip featuring interviews with CEO Tim Cook and design lead Jony Ive.
Earlier in May this year, news circulated the internet that Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar, Kobe Bryant, spent a day in Apple’s Cupertino complex, meeting with different executives including Apple Inc.’s Senior Vice President of Design, Jony Ive. At that time, it was speculated that Apple brought him on for a possible partnership for testing the company’s latest fitness wearables. While we don’t really have confirmation around that still, in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Kobe confirmed the meeting with Ive and shed some light on how the discussion went.
What do you get when you lock two of the world's most rockstar designers in a room, infuse them with inspiration and throw a charitable cause into the equation? It might sound like the beginning of a terrible joke doing the rounds on the Internet, but the reality is actually a lot more inspiring, heart-warming and aesthetically attractive. What you actually get is a bespoke, purpose made work-surface crafted out of solid aluminum that has been designed to raise money for one of the world's worthiest causes.
Apple's Jony Ive was once described by the late Steve Jobs as the guy with "the most power" within the Cupertino company besides, of course, himself, and having been responsible for designing some of Apple's most iconic products throughout the years, it's little surprise he's garnered himself something of a cult following.
It may come as a surprise given the handset's rip-roaring success, but Apple's iPhone very nearly didn't make it out of the company's development labs, according to a man who would know; Apple Senior VP of Design, Jony Ive.
