George Francis Hotz is known for being among the group of people who first unlocked the iPhone to work on carriers other than those which Apple officially supported e.g. AT&T. He went to release jailbreaking tools like purplera1n, blackra1n, blacksn0w, a hack the PS3 and recently Limera1n which jailbreaks iOS 4.1.

Steve, the guy who was behind PushFix 2.0 (the first real fix for Push Notifications) for unlocked iPhones and Blacksn0w RC2 fix for iPhone 3.1.3 has just released Blacksn0w RC2 for iOS 4. This version of blacksn0w is basically a repackaged version of the original unlock released by geohot, and the binaries which were recently released by MSFT Guy for 05.11.07 baseband on iPhone 3GS, running iOS 4.0 GM (formerly iPhone OS 4).

We have already seen iOS 4.0 Beta 4 (formerly iPhone OS 4) being successfully jailbroken and unlocked on iPhone 3GS and 3G using ultrasn0w and blacksn0w. But for this final release of iOS 4, both the tools are likely going to get an upgrade soon to make them full compatible. The iPhone Dev Team has already promised a full carrier unlocking solution sometime this month for 05.12.01 baseband. Geohot might also update blacksn0w unlock for this latest firmware, which has already been successfully ported to the Beta 4 of iOS 4.

Yet another update to Sn0wbreeze has been released. This new update version 3.1.3 V1.5.2 brings fix for 64-bit users who were earlier having problems using this software with their iPhone on 64-bit Windows machines. Also added in this version is more speed and reliability, and the package has now been reduced to just 18mb in size. Unfortunately though, Blacksn0w unlock for iPhone 3GS is still crippled in this version, but you can follow the fix posted here for blacksn0w to unlock 05.11.07 baseband on this latest firmware. If you have iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS or iPhone touch 1G/2G, you can use sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3.

A fix has been released to unlock the latest iPhone 3.1.3 firmware on 05.11.07 baseband using Blacksn0w. Most of you who have tried to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 with 05.11.07 baseband using blacksn0w might have faced this problem where the said tool is unable to unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS. This is because blacksn0w is locating a function to patch by searching the binary for a reference to string “SIM is not supported”. In iPhone OS 3.1.3, Apple has replaced the same function in a way that it now uses the string “Verified”. Since the location to patch is determined by instruction search&replace, the said patch still works in iPhone 3.1.3 after changing the string and its length in Blacksn0w binary.
