Samsung Galaxy Alpha To Feature iPhone-Like Chamfered Edges [Photos]

Even though Samsung has successfully competed alongside the Apple iPhone over the past few years in the battle of the high-end smartphones, there are definitely strengths and weaknesses on both sides. For while critics of Apple have pointed out the lack of display real-estate, NFC and other such features, the Samsung Galaxy line-up has not yet offered fans of premium, metallic build anything to write home about. The Korean outfit looked on as the likes of HTC and compatriot LG began churning out these more substantially-crafted devices, but according to a new leak, the supposed “Galaxy Alpha” may include chamfered metal edges akin to the Apple iPhone.

There’s do doubt that, for 2014, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has done a marvelous job. Not only is it a marked improvement on the preceding Galaxy S4, but it boasts arguably the best display seen on a smartphone, and with a very, very robust rear-facing camera capable of 4K video shooting, it’s made for the Instagram Age.

But despite seeming almost perfect, the plastic finish falls below the expectations of a growing number of prospective Galaxy owners, and even before the GS5 was announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it was heavily rumored that the maker of the Tizen OS would finally be giving these folks what they wanted.

New images of the purported Galaxy Alpha, a separate device from the upcoming Galaxy Note 4, have just been leaked on Weibo, and as you can see, the build isn’t too dissimilar to that of the iPhone 4 /4s. It has long since been reported that only the edges of this enigmatic device would be metallic, allowing users to remove the battery where necessary, and so while this handset may not offer an aluminum unibody a la HTC’s One series, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

The Alpha will apparently arrive in 4.7-inch and 6.7-inch variants, and although details are currently at a premium, the Alpha looks set to be Samsung’s secret weapon against the much-hyped release of the iPhone 6 from Apple.
