Rivian Is Working On Apple Watch As A Key And More

Electric carmaker Rivian says that it isn’t going to add CarPlay support any time soon, but it is at least working on two other integrations with Apple devices and services.

It’s reported that Rivian is working on using Apple Music integration as a way to soften the blow of there being no CarPlay support, while drivers could soon be able to use their Apple Watch as their key.

9to5Mac reports that a thread on a Rivian forum says that Rivian’s head of software development, Wassym Bensaid, confirmed that it is working on Apple Watch support for the R1T and R1S vehicles.

According to a user on the Rivian Forums, Bensaid said during the Q&A session that support for “Apple Watch as a key is being actively looked into/tested” and is on the company’s “roadmap” for a future software update.

It isn’t clear if that means that Rivian is going to use Apple Car Key as the basis for that, but if it does then iPhones will also work as well.

While CarPlay support would no doubt be very well received, the next best thing is at least support for Apple Music. It’s reported that there is upcoming support for an Apple Music app at least, although it isn’t clear when any of this will happen.
