Report: Apple Watch OLED Display To Be Replaced With microLED Starting 2020

Every Apple Watch sold to date includes an OLED display, but that might be set to change as soon as next year. Future models may be set to use microLED displays instead, according to a report by Economic Daily News.

Apple has been said to be working on microLED technology for months and the report says that Apple is working with Taiwanese manufacturers with an eye to replacing the LG Display OLED panels with new microLED ones.

If all goes according to plan the switch could happen as soon as 2020.

While, predictably, nobody was willing to confirm that they were working with Apple one did go so far as to say that it was in discussions with the US smart watch industry. Given Apple essentially is the smart watch industry, it could well be the Apple Watch maker.

By switching from OLED to microLED Apple would see multiple benefits. Improved battery life would certainly be one of those and given the Apple Watch’s single-day battery life that would be a huge boon. The use of microLED would also help with miniaturization, potentially making the Apple Watch thinner and lighter in the process.

All of this will come too soon for the 2019 Apple Watch, but if these reports are accurate we should expect more information to leak out as we edge closer to the 2020 release cycle.
