In these times of strictly limited data bundles and high overage charges, let alone the fact you may not get coverage good enough to actually make use of that allowance, we're all grateful for any help we can get in making the most of what we've got. There are plenty of different apps out there that tell us where the nearest cell tower is, or where the best Wi-Fi network is according to your location, but having all that and more in one place is always preferable, and that's just what OpenSignal does.
Apple today has released a new firmware update for Apple TV. The set-top box has seen its software bumped to version 5.2.1, and as well as a bunch of the customary bug fixes, there have also been significant enhancements made to the Hulu Plus interface for 5.2.x firmware users.

“Java is everywhere” is the official statement pertaining to the platform, and that’s as true as the sky being blue. The technology exists from within simplest of things to desktop computers, smartphones, tablets and whatnot. The usefulness of Java cannot be denied even in the slightest, either, since it’s the driver for delivery of a lot of content. It seems rather odd, then, that you’d want to disable something as useful as this. There’s a good reason for that, however, that we’ll discuss just past the jump.
Apple is pretty stringent when it comes to what is, and what isn't allowed to grace its prized iTunes App Store. The company is notorious for swiftly shutting out any attempt to defy the company's system of rules, with high-profile casualties now including the seemingly innocent VLC Media Player. Someone overlooking the moderation process clearly wasn't on the ball when checking an app by the name of Awesome Baby Names, which bears a rather interesting secret; it actually contains its very own Game Boy Advance emulator within, and although, well, it's not actually very good, one has to admire the tenacity of its creators. More details after the jump.
Smartphones, in general, have evolved greatly over the course of past few years, with the recent of them seeing the most significant, defining moments in the mobile device technology. With its Retina display introduced in iPhone 4, Apple started a feud that particularly focused on higher resolution screens with remarkably deep blacks and crazy contrast ratios. The trend didn’t stop there, either, as certain manufacturers continued to raise the bar in the pixel density arena even if the Cupertino giant never took it above a certain level. These days, several high-end Android smartphones are boasting a true HD, 1080p screen packed in just about 5” of diagonal real estate, giving the crispiest displays that we’d ever dreamed of, to date.
Most smartphone users, regardless of the operating system they’ve grown accustomed to, have likely heard of WhatsApp, a cross-platform online messaging service. The app’s increased popularity has led its developers to move it to a yearly subscription model, and now this change will make its way to the iOS flavor of WhatsApp by the end of the year, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has revealed.
If Geekbench scores ruled the mobile industry, Samsung's latest and greatest Galaxy S4 handset would have blown out the competition. Having carried out some comparisons of the Geekbench 2 scores of the current popular and big-selling devices, PrimateLabs has established that not only is the GS4 considerably faster than any other smartphone ever made, but almost twice as fast as the iPhone 5, now that’s something.
Glovebox, a new app courtesy of an XDA-Developers forum member, adds a sidebar to Android which allows users to quickly launch their favorite applications. More details right after the jump.
Making phone calls, checking emails and browsing the web are some of the more useful features of Apple's range of iOS powered gadgets, but the introduction of iMessage meant that even iPod touch and iPad owners can send and receive messages to users who are running iOS 5 and above.
