Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. I downloaded blackra1n and ran it and everything. it wiped my phone and then i had to restore it and blackra1n isn't on it at all. i had the new firmware already on it so i didn't see a point in restoring it and updating it again unless that is what i need to do

  2. For all you guys saying that it enters recovery mode try it again without XP compatibility mode. It worked for me!

I jailbreak my 3 iPhones 3g s (for the whole family)the very same day Blackra1n was available to the public and updated it 2 days ago with the Rc3 jailbrake and today I when and got all the iPhones prepaid and they work like a charm, yeah is true I cancelled my contract with Rogers and paid the penalty about $200 bucks per phone but I know that in the long run it'll be worth the money, because I'll be saving thousands of dollars over the next three years.

    I got three cheap Nokia prepaid phones at FIDO $35 dollars each and $20 dollars the prepaid card and all I did when I got home was swap the new SIM cards for the old ones. Me and my family are VERY happy about it

  5. plug your ipod in to your computer and open itunes, and hold the home and sleep button. It should go in to dfu (restore) mode. The usb wire symbol will come up. Then you can restore it to the firware you want again

  9. run blackrain on my 3.1.2 2g phone – has now disabled my wireless and bluetooth. Boot Neuter tells me it can't talk due to commcenter clash! can anyone tell me whats gone wrong???

  16. I just performed the jailbreak and i cannot access my music or pictures of movies, i have no icons on my main screen except for youtube, stocks and weather. Please HELP,
    According to iTunes the music is still there but i cannot access it

  20. okay so i downloaded blackra1n ran it and it put my ipod on restore mode then it just wouldnt do anything the blackra1n programe just said activating restore or something any help? i ran it in compatability mode.

  21. try holding down tha hold button and pluging in ur usb to the i pod and restore it then it should work trust me

  29. I'm running on 3.1.2 ipod touch 3G and i clicked on make it ra1n but its just hung at entering recovery mode and now my screen is stuck with a usb cable and itunes sign.

    what shoud i do.

  33. Have you tried holding down the Power and Home buttons simultaneously till you see the boot logo yet?
    (let go of both buttons when you see the apple boot logo and make sure your ipod is disconnected from the computer)

    if restoring your iPod in recovery mode still doesnt work, try restoring it in DFU mode.

After I restore my ipod touch 3g (32gig) to factory setting with 3.1.2 firmware, i click make it ra1n on the blackra1n thing and it says its jailbroken and i need to wait for reboot but my ipod is at a blank screen. Any suggestions? I tried clicking making it ra1n a couple of times but it never reboots.

  41. If I just want to jailbreak – not unlock – any issues? I have 3.1.2 and f/w 05.11.07. Repeat – I do not want to unlock. This is a corp phone and I want to keep it on their carrier. I just want to be able to access more features of the phone. Now, as for the apps which I purchased already through iTunes – will I be able to reinstall them when I reconnect? Obviously I don't think I'll want to do a full resync, as that would probably mess up the Jailbreak process post completion. Just want to make sure that I'm not cutting myself off at the knees. Thx.

  42. I had similar problem, I have Orange UK. lock with 3.1.2 firmware and 05.11.07 baseband.
    What i did first, i restored my firmware in DFU mode with official firmware. for restoring press and hold home and power button and when it boots and show grey apple logo keep pressing home button new screen will come that will show to connect with itunes. Connect with your PC. and at itunes it will show restore your firmware. now restore official firmware. It will restore fresh iPhone firmware
    Second phase. if possible try to “make it rain” on other pc. with fresh itunes installed. or close all services of itunes from task manager at your current pc. then again try “make it ra1n”.
    This solved my problem.
    Hopefully it will work.
