Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. Hi Jim, I am having the same problem as you have had! i jailbroke with blackra1n and everything was working fine but all of a sudden i get this message on itunes asking me to restore my phone. Could you please tell me how i can fix that please. my email is emittani@gmail.com thanks
    Erdal

  2. I installed Blackra1n fine, then installed cydia.

After installing SBsettings in Cydia, it asks to reboot the phone. Once I reboot it, it goes in the restore mode and I have to restore my phone settings to get out of it.

    What possibly is going wrong?

    Its iphone 3gs 3.1.2.

  3. usb and itunes symbols are showing after jailbreaking iphone 3gs during reboot.
    need advice. thanx.

  4. blackra1n installed easily, and I downloaded cydia. When I connect the iTouch in itunes it just says it's syncing repeatedly until I manually remove it. Also, attempting to install Monopoly didn't work, is there something else I need to download in order to install apps?

  5. hey who is mike?! what is 'his method'?! pleeeeease help… mi ipod touch 1G 3.1.2 is stuck in the 'iTunes-Usb' image!

  6. the thing i do is after i hack mine it reboots and enters recory mode .. but i go bak and i use blackra1n app then it reboots and there u go sadly u have to do this every times its rebooted

  7. i jailbreaked it! THANKS A LOT MIKE! REALLY! you are a f*cking genious. good luck to everybody… follow mike's method. TRUST ME

  8. how come whenever i use blackra1n for my ipod touch it jailbreaks it all fiund but then if i turn off or pulg my divice in it comes up with the “plugin itunes” screan and then deleltes all my apps and makes me have to restore my whoole ipod
it worked perfect with my iphone no problems but not for my ipod touch

  9. person… I having trouble, with my old IPhone 3G (no S) it worked perfectly, even after I upgraded it to new Modem Firmware 05.11.07.

I bought a new Iphone 3GS, and after I used it, everytime I shutdown my phone and restart it, it goes into recovery mode and its fucked.

I have to do the blackra1n thing again just to get it out of recoverly mode, then do a complete restore, which locks the phone again…

I hope he fixes that soon.

  10. Jess1401… it doesn't work… after you turn it off and turn it back on again and get the “plugin itunes” screen (also called recovery mode)… plug the Iphone back into your computer and re-run Blackra1n… it will get the phone back to where it was. But you are right… its fucked… Apple has found a way to stop this Blackra1n application after shut-down. I hope he finds a way to fix this. BIG BIG Donation from me if he can….

  11. Apple has found a way to STOP Blackra1n… it works only until you shut-down your Iphone. After that its in recovery mode, and you have to restore the Iphone, which loses data and locks up again.

    Any solutions to this yet?

  12. i have restored my phone after winterboard crashed it and i cannot re-download blackra1n. It says account suspended – how do i re-download??

  13. I don't know what the big deal is..First off, Apple has not stopped blackrain. It's probably the user plugging his phone into ITunes and it automatically updates your IPhone. Turn off the auto update on ITunes.
I have an Iphone 3G with the latest software 3.1.2 (7D11). I simply plugged my IPhone into ITunes , hit the restore button, waited, new empty LOCKED phone on AT@t. I left the phone plugged into the computer, ITunes STILL running, with the auto update turned OFF. THEN i started blackrain, waited a few minutes, then it rebooted. THEN i unplugged it from the comp, turned phone back off, inserted my TMobile sim card, turned phone back on, presto, TMobile service..and ive turned my phone on and off 500 times, no prob.
Some of you that are having problems, maybe you are on ATT and THEY are fukking with ya..switch to TMObile. And yes, I can send picks in text, record vids, etc..

  14. This was the E-Zest jailbreak EVUR like OMG all i had to do was turn my ipod off and click the make it rain button the only dwnside is that KREEPY ass picture that pops up on my ipod while itz jailbreaking OHHHHH SCARRRYYYYYY lol

  15. Same problem as everyone else-I ran Blackra1n and it worked perfectly, but when I turned on my ipod touch it went into recovery-so now I can only put it in sleep mode to avoid the annoying process of restoring it…
    can this be fixed?

  16. If your phone got production week >40 in the serial number Blackra1n won't work if you restart you phone. The production week in the serial number is the 4 and 5 number in the serial. Just have to wait and see when they fix it. For those with a number <40, it will work, if not you're doing something wrong.

  17. I was able to jailbreak my iphone 3g with no problem whatsoever. I told my cousin and he wanter me to do his. When I did it, Blackra1n installed perfectly but when I chose to install Cydia, Rock and Blacksnow the phone got stuck on loading Blacksnow so I harbooted it. Now the phone only stays in the apple mainscrean and never loads to the Home screen. I tried draining the battery out but nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? Anybody know how to fix it???

  18. Type your reply…You nailed it. 44 is my week serial number for the 3GS. 23 for the 3G. How'd you know that?

  19. I have 1st gen iphone and im trying to jailbreak with black ra1n. it will go thru the steps and reboot but it wont be on my phone anywhere. i have 3.1.2 with 04.05.04. any ideas

  20. it shows the itunes version of the recovery sign instead and then nothing happens! please help! I REALLY want to jailbreak my iTouch and there's no othe way!!!!!!!

  21. restore your ipod to factory settings get the newest software; 3.1.2 and then download blackra1n keep it open and then plug your ipod in and click the make it rain button and it should fix your problem.

  22. If your phone tells you to connect it back to itunes and askes you to restore after you jailbreak/unlock it, just run blackra1n again instead of restoring. This seems like a temp. fix until the developer gives us an update! If your production week is under 40, you're fine, but those with brand spanking new iphones do have a problem.

So in the meantime, try not to reboot your iphone and if you do, connect it to your computer and run blackra1n again.

  23. i downloaded blackra1n… & did the compatibility thing w/windows vista.. but it just stays at the screen “entering recovery..” forever. & itunes wont restore. is my iphone lost for good now?? i need help 🙁 please!

  24. Do you know of a way to fix it? Seems like Apple is preventing blackra1n from running. The only way I know to fix it when I restart is to run blackra1n again without restoring. That seems to be a temp fix. My production week is 44 🙁 Darn you, brand new 3GS!

  25. vista or win 7, if you get the connect to itunes restore, after running make it rain, setting blackra1n to xp compat is not the answer set it to use admin settings and just run it again, dont do the itunes restore

  26. Ok, I've jail-broke a few Ipods (all successful), but When i did it to my brand new (bought it on black friday) ipod touch 3g the stupid thing just goes blank (the screen doesn't even come on), and itunes says ipod in recovery mode you must recover to use blah blah. Anyway Black ra1n does not see it and it is completely unresponsive. If i hold the power and the home button it just disconnects in windows but nothing happens on the ipod itself. I would Appreciate any help.
