Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. Blackra1n works awesome wish i wouldve done it sooner…… props to the genius who thought of this one

  2. Hi, I tried the tool but every time i startit (after restoring a freshcopy of the firmware) the blackra1n gives me entering reovery mode, and the ipod shows the connect to itunes logo and stays like that .
    Im using vista . HELP!

  3. How I succeeded in 30 seconds–I'm on Vista 32 bit, iPhone 3G

    Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager
Processes tab, right click iTuneshelper.exe to End Process Tree
Right click Blackra1n, open Properties, Compatibility tab, check Run as Admin
Do not check compatibility mode for Windows XP

Make sure device is unplugged from computer
Run Blackra1n, click Make it Rain, then plug in iPhone
Within seconds, I saw Elijah Wood–erhm–I mean GeoHot

  4. Just don't seem to work. Tried a few times, each time it ended up in revovery mode, which means that each time I turned off/on the iphone, the pic of itune/usb showed up, and i had to restore and update my iphone in order to use it again. Tried all the suggested methods, just not working.

  5. U can enter blackra1n in google and make sure ur ipod or iphone is plugged into itunes and then click on the first link of google search and at the bottom u click the apple if u have a mac or the vista symbol, its really easy

  6. log on your pc as a different user, preferable one without any admin rights, then open up the blackra1n app (run as administrator, type in the admin password) and from there follow the normal procedure. this worked for me.

  7. Tried switching to diferent user, same thing happened again, when turning off/on, the USB/itune pic reappeared. The only other thing i could do apart from restoring with itune is to run Blackra1n again. just have to make sure internet is available each time my phone's out of battery.

  8. i get this error when i click blackra1n
the procedure entry point squilite3_prepare_v2 could not be located in the dynamic link library SQLite3.dll.

    help…

  9. After a successful jailbrake on 3.1.2 and using the iPhone 3GS fine for 2 weeks I restored it to the original 3.1.2. Now after running blackra1n it won't jailbrake it again. I tried several times but with no luck. Any ideas suggestions what should I do? Thanks!

  10. if u have cydia on it, download installous and you can download all the games in the app store!!!!!!!!

  11. If you’ve rebooted ur phone after installing and ur stuck on the itunes logo/usb screen screen don’t worry.

Just re-run blackrain when ur on that screen at blackrain will reboot ur iphone for you.

This is the only downfall with balckra1n as u need to ‘make it rain’ everytime u reboot ur iphone so try not to reboot ur iphone unless ur near a pc lol.

  12. If you’ve rebooted ur phone after installing and ur stuck on the itunes logo/usb screen screen don’t worry.

Just re-run blackrain when ur on that screen at blackrain will reboot ur iphone for you.

  13. I accidentally disconnected the USB cable after clicked on the “make it ra1n” button. Now my iPhone stays at the “iTunes” screen, but iTune cannot recognise it, and blackra1n cannot see it either, what should I do?

  14. when i clicked on make it rain it just said waiting for device and after that nothing happened. even when i had my device plugged up. why is that?

  15. Hi, idk if anyone has been having trouble, but I tried so many times to get it to work…

The third time I tried I took these steps…

    >Placed Blackra1n.exe right in to the “C:” Drive (Not in any folders)
    >Placed QTCF.dll right in to the “C:” Drive, just as I did with Blackra1n.exe (You can find this in one of the sub folders in “C:Program FilesQuicktime”
    >Placed QTCF.dll (The same one I had before) in “C:WindowsSystem32” Just to do it!
    >Pluged my IPod in and started Blackra1n.exe
    >Hit the button and it went without a hitch!

My problem was the IPod went in to recovery mode, and blackrain stopped at “Entering Recovery Mode…” and would not budge… Even with the 'Connect to ITunes' logo up, I closed Blackra1n, Did the steps above, and then it worked!

Once you get it going it is easy!!

BTW, I'm running Vista… and allowed the program to run as the administrator…

Hope this helps anybody out there!!!

  16. hi i unlocked my iphone 3g with blackra1n. it now works as a phone and the original apps work. If i download another app, it opens for a second and then closes right away. i was wondering what i can do to fix this..or am i supposed to do something with cydia..or something extra on the iphone once its unlocked?

  17. I had the same problem with it hanging at “waiting for device” and my ipod on the recovery screen… after a billion restores I finally unchecked run as XP and it worked… I was still running it as admin… I am running vista and I have an ipod 3G 30gig… the only problem is that tethered units need br to reboot….

  18. can u jailbreak the iphone 3gs with blackra1n? if not what can u use cause i used purple ra1n and it got stuffed up but if u can use it wif blackra1n how do u do it?

  19. Everybody seems to be having problems with blckrain…so I'll just wait.
What happened to QuickPwn?? I had no problems with jailbreaking with that program.

  20. hi. i was able to jailbroke my iphone 2g 3.1.2 with baseband 04.05.04.. after doing so i hav blackra1n on my iphone.. when i downloaded cydia (thru wifi conection) after its respring i cudnt found CYDIA on my iphone.. i tried turning it off and downloading it again but to no avail.. pls help..

  21. You have to reconnect your iphone to your PC, allow/open itunes, and restore the settings. I'm still working on the rest. I am trying the QTCF.dll move as Mike stated above. I am having the same issues as he was and I will let you know if this fix works (for iphone, I believe he was updating an ipod.)

  22. Well, I must say, this worked. iTunes kept telling me to restore my device (which I did, twice…) and Blackra1n was stuck on 'Entering Recovery Mode”. I moved the files and copied the .dll file as instructed (this file is hidden BTW); ran Blackra1n again and it worked. Thank you very much for the fix Mike. What made you think to move that .dll file around?

  23. WOW, first i tried running with compability for windows XP and then it hanged up at ''entering recovery mode''
then i tried only running as administrator (without compability mode fore XP (im using vista btw))
then i tried mikes method and it worked perfectly, took about 1 minute and the ipod had rebooted and everything! Thanks geohot! And thanks Mike ;D

  24. how can i unistall blackrain? im assuming it didnt install correctly cause i have no icons on the bottom of my phone and its gray. i cant make calls , i cant recieve texts

  25. hey guys,I used to Iphone 3g, yesterday I trade my 3g for a 3gs ,I ran blackra1n and snowed it ,but anytime I restart my device or try to turn it on agian it asks me to connect it to itunes and ,itunes asks for restoring company settings, its the new baseband verison,i found it if I run blackra1n again it will reboot,I do not know whats wrong with that and how can I fix it,by the way I used windows 7 orginal version for this procedure.
