Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. Do these ever work? First shot was with Pwnage tool. It turned my iPhone into a limited iPod touch. Second try was black ra1n and lost half my apps, internet tethering, phone, ipod even my settings app is gone. WTF if I get a call, I get the screen to answer but if you answer the phone picks up the call, freezes on the answer screen and keeps ringing and ringering untill you do a hard restart. I forgot what was I trying to gain?

  2. Thanks Schlimm for your reply. Thats what I have been doing to get it out of recovery mode. But if for some reason I have to reboot my iphone when I am not near my laptop then there is no way I can get it to turn on right…

  3. I've got the same problem, and i've tried restoring my iphone and running blackra1n from a mac (originally tried it on Windows 7) but no joy. The phone is unlocked but each time the phone reboots i have to plug it into my laptop and run blackra1n just to get it our of recovery mode. It's not a problem yet but obviously should the phone restart whilst i'm out then that's an issue. Has anyone else come across this and if so have the fixed it without having to always plug it into a laptop and run blackra1n

  4. Yeah, this is amazing.. Sometimes my phone reboots.. and I got scared as hell last night because iTunes wanted to sync up, so I unplugged it quick 😛
I've had no issues other than poor battery life my first day *looks at phone* And only 10% of my battery was used last night while I slept… So it does cause some issues with that. but you know what, Just keep a charger handy, I say!

Thank you so much ^_^d This is amazing, and I realy appreciate you, taking the time to develop something to make everyone else happy, it's very kind. I will be sure to donate ^^

  5. Everyone, I've been through your comments, seriously.. you need to learn to read -_- Honestly.. I just downloaded Blackra1n, put it on my desktop, got a picture of a really cute guy, with iPhones all around.. And clicked “Make it Ra1n” I was waiting for something else, cause I am used to Redsn0w. Haha But now, I guess we don't need them 😛 I admit I am terrified that my phone will die, and I wont ever be able to use it again.. But, this seems like a pretty good program, I only use Cydia for “TWO” Things. Bluemoon Application, and Ring tones from the movie “One Missed Call” 😛 I'm not greedy.

  6. You both probably have the new bootrom. No fix for this yet, br is the only jailbreak that will work and as you can see it is a “tethered” option.

  7. Instructions are one thing and obviously fairly easy to do. But that doesn't negate the fact that for some people it's just not working. My “Make it rain” sits at the “Running….” prompt for over a half hour with no changes and I have no recourse to figure out what's going on.

  8. I got to the point, where is says wait for the iPod to reboot. And then i got a notification on my desktop saying that the hardware has malfunctioned and my computer cannot recognize it. My ipod won't leave the screen telling me to connect to iTunes when it already is.

  9. I HOPE THIS HELPS…

I'm on Vista, and I followed step 4, the one that says to put the program into Windows XP mode. If you're on Vista, DON'T DO THIS. It put my phone into recovery mode and then quit. I came “this close” to just “Restoring” my phone and completely wiping it.
Instead, I went back to the program in my download file and unselected the “XP Compatibility” box, and reran the program.
At that point, It Ran Like A Dream!
This is a wonderful program, but the directions above are just a bit misleading, and could totally screw you. Like I said, I hope this helps…

  10. You wanna thank Geohot donate I did $5 as soon as I unlocked my phone thank you thank you thank you you are a the best

  11. does any1 no how i can get flash player on my iphone you help would be most welcome

I also get errors when trying to install certain apps in Rock like openssh for example.

  13. i jailbroke my iphon2 3g and installed blacksn0w. first it showed searching then its showing no service…. what to do…

  14. i had restored my ipod by accedent. then i had decided since there is nothing on my ipod then i should jailbreak it. i attempted to jailbreak the ipod, and itunes is saying that it cannot read my ipod. i do not know how to stop it from not reading my ipod touch. if you kno any results please let me kno

  15. the jailbreak worked and I installed winterboard. I was asked to reboot the phone, however since the phone restarted, I am just seeing the apple icon and nothing else is happening. I tried using the reset button, making it rain again, nothing works 🙁 please, somebody help! kinda worried!

  17. Worked Amazing!!!!!
    Quetsion…

    Would really appreciate it 🙂
    Thank you!

  24. I'm having a major reboot problem. At first, the jailbreak worked fine for a few minutes, then it said it was finishing the installation for Cydia. It randomly shut off and restarted then. and ever since then I've been stuck at an Apple Logo with a loading circle eventually popping out under it, but it doesn't advance from here. Anyone have a similar problem? Please help. 🙁

  25. I’m also having the same problem. Mine isn’t even being recognized by iTunes. Anyway, mine is stuck on the Apple logo as well and eventually gets the little loading circle under it, but nothing happens after, no matter how many times I reset my iPhone. Anyone have a solution or similar problem? Please help us! 🙁

  26. My iPhone 3G doesn't detect WiFi
    OS version 3.1.2 (7D11)
    Model MB489T
    Modem Firmware 05.11.07
Any suggestion how to get around this problem?
