The Google Play Store has risen from obscurity to compete strongly against the mighty App Store of iOS, and although it doesn’t yet match Apple’s online content hub for sheer number of high-quality apps, it continues to edge closer by day. In its constant quest to ensure Android users enjoy the very best experience when fishing for new apps, books, games and other such investments, Google has been periodically releasing updates to the official Play Store app, and today, you can grab the APK file for the very latest version 4.2.9.
Few weeks back, we saw version 4.2.3 leaked from the Android 4.3 ROM for the LG-made Nexus 4, but this build, which has surfaced via the same Android build for the new Nexus 7, holds a slightly higher version number. Since it’s still a v4.2.x release, we wouldn’t expect much to have changed, and having downloaded and run this new release briefly ourselves, we cannot report any significant alterations, let alone new features. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to run the very latest versions of apps whether improvements are obvious or under the hood, so check the foot of this post for the download information.
As you will probably have noticed, Google officially announced and launched Android 4.3 only recently, and although many Droidsters will naturally be keen to discover if and when their particular device will be seeing that all-important OTA update, the search giant has only promised a handful of Nexus (as well as Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One handsets) will be seeing Android 4.3 initially.
The fragmented nature of the Big G’s ecosystem means it’s anybody’s guess when other devices will be treated to the new software, and although we don’t anticipate as painstaking a wait as was evident with Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) – in which some devices were promised an update that never happened – it could be a while yet before your smartphone or tablet sees any of the new implementations.
