Apple Might Bring The 12-inch MacBook Back, Report Claims

Apple could be working on the idea of bringing the 12-inch MacBook back, according to a new report.

That report comes via Korean blog Naver and the “yeux1122” account which, to date, has had mixed results in being able to come up with accurate reports like this.

According to that report a source at a company that supplies Taiwanese parts to Apple believes that the company is considering bringing the 12-inch MacBook back from the dead. However, it isn’t thought that Apple has yet decided that it will indeed offer the 12-inch MacBook in the future.

Rumors of the 12-inch MacBook’s return tend to pop up every few months. Both Ming-Chi Kuo and display analyst Ross Young have previously suggested that Apple doesn’t see a future in the sub-13-inch notebook market.

That’s a shame, however. The 12-inch MacBook was the spiritual successor to the 11-inch MacBook Air and was popular despite its failings. The thin and light design, paired with the lack of fans, meant that only Intel’s low-power chips could be used. That crippled the machine, making it almost unusable for anything other than the most basic of computational tasks.

But the use of Apple silicon could potentially change all of that. Apple’s chips don’t need as much cooling as Intel’s, if any at all, which would make them perfectly suited to being used in something like a future 12-inch MacBook.
