Apple Approved AirPower Production “Earlier This Year,” Says WSJ

Apple’s ongoing week of fun saw the arrival of the updated AirPods that we’ve been waiting for earlier today, and we’re now wondering when the other shoe will drop. That shoe is obviously AirPower, the charging mat that is now so late, it’s almost laughable.

According to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, we might finally be set to see the end of a saga, with AirPower having been approved for production earlier this year.

The company earlier this year approved production of a wireless-charging pad called AirPower, according to people familiar with the matter. It had announced the product in late 2017.

AirPower, which would allow users to charge the new AirPods and an iPhone simultaneously, has been delayed by product-development challenges, the people said. Apple typically announces new products within months of beginning production.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on AirPower.

AirPower was teased back in September of 2017 when the iPhone X was being announced. Apple said that AirPower would let people charge the iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3, and AirPods at the same time. We’ve been waiting for both the updated wireless charging AirPods and AirPower ever since, and now we have the former. Will we see the latter soon, too?

We wouldn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up by saying AirPower will arrive tomorrow, or even that Apple can find a new product to release every day this week. We can hope, however, and if Apple does finally get AirPower out the door this week, we think we might just scream.

After all, there’s a good chance that the price will make us do that, anyway.
