The PlayStation 4 event earlier this week threw up as many questions as it answered, notably pertaining to what it looks like, how much it will cost, and when it will be available. We have no real idea of what form the console will take, its price, or any real details on ETA except "in time for the holidays," yet many retailers have deemed this information enough to begin taking pre-orders and running competitions as they try and take advantage of the PS4 Mania.
The term mania is perhaps a bit of a push, but with game stores having really struggled to get customers through doors in recent years as the downloading of games becomes all the more popular, it’s not surprising many of the big-name retailers see 2013’s console war as something of a reprieve.
A number of UK retailers have wasted no time in outlining their intention to be amongst the go-to places for would-be PlayStation 4 owners later this year, with both GAME and ShopTo allowing people to register their interest and pre-order a console. In addition, Amazon’s UK arm has its own PlayStation 4 section allowing fans to sign up for updates on exactly when the online retailer will begin taking pre-orders.
GameStop, one of the largest and most well-known game retailers in the US, has not begun taking PS4 pre-orders just yet, sensibly noting of how few details have been announced as yet. PowerUp Rewards members can, however, join the PS4 First to Know List to receive information, special offers and key details of the console.
Accessory maker KontrolFreek is offering gamers an opportunity to win one of four PS4 consoles for simply adding a “Like” to the company’s official Facebook page. It’s an interesting tactic, and one which will likely land KontrolFreek more than enough new followers to justify the giving away of four consoles. But while KontrolFreek is reputable and will, we trust, follow through with the competition, there will be scammers out there looking to make a quick buck from anxious fans, so proceed with caution.
As we continue to learn more details and information regarding the PlayStation, attention has already begun focusing on what Microsoft is planning with the next-gen Xbox console. The Redmond company is said to be planning a special event at some point in April, this year’s E3 expo will be one to savor for gaming fans.
