United States President Trump has again threatened to levy a large tariff on the import of Apple’s iPhones, saying that he “long ago informed” Apple CEO Tim Cook that they should be built in the United States.
Trump, posting on his TruthSocial account, said that he didn’t want iPhones to be built in “India, or anyplace else”. Apple currently has its iPhones assembled in India and China.
Trump’s post threatened a 25% tariff on iPhones that are not built in the United States (which is all of them,) although it remains to be seen if that comes to fruition. Tariffs have been threatened before, only for Trump to exempt iPhones.
The social media post also suggested that the tariff may be higher than 25%. The full TruthSocial post is quoted verbatim below.
I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S. Thank your for your attention to this matter!
Apple has so far made no suggestion that it is planning to move iPhone production to the United States, likely due to the costs involved in making such a move. It isn’t clear whether a 25% tariff would be enough to change the figures for Apple, but the company is yet to comment on Trump’s latest outburst.
