The Outlast Trials Announced – Co-op Game Set In The Outlast Universe

Red Barrels, the team behind the Outlast series of horror games, took to Facebook today to announce a new Outlast game. Called The Outlast Trials, the upcoming title will feature co-op – a first for the franchise.

“Set in the era of the Cold War, The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors that await by themselves or with fellow test subjects,” reads the announcement. The game doesn’t yet have a release date, though we do know it isn’t a VR game.

The image shared alongside the announcement features three dishevelled men wearing what look like night-vision goggles. Those goggles had a few fans fearing the game may be VR-only à la Half-Life: Alyx, though the developer was quick to confirm, in a comment under the aforementioned Facebook post, that it isn’t.

It seems the game’s foundations have been laid, with content now being added. “Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time to focus on content creation, variety… and gore,” says Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf. Of course, there’s no telling how long that will take. Outlast 2 came out in 2017, roughly four years after the original. If the developer’s trailing cadence is to be taken into account, it may be a while before we see The Outlast Trials.

The Outlast series is considered a staple of the stealth horror genre, and for good reason. With its trademark hide-or-run gameplay, the franchise thrives on disarming the player, making them feel helpless in a world filled with unspeakable horrors.
