With Optical Drives Being Phased Out, Is The Same Inevitable For The Hard Drive / Flash Memory? [Opinion]

Ben Reid·November 14, 2012
Apple has led the way in removing optical drives from notebooks - a pattern followed by Windows OEMs with the ultrabook - and with the latest iMac refresh also eradicating the optical media slot, it's fair to say its days are numbered. With improved connections, most music, movies, and software can be downloaded and shared in a much more convenient fashion via the Web, but it's fair to say optical media isn't the only piece of once-essential hardware leaving our computers and notebooks in an apparent hurry. Improved online services have seen native storage space become less and less relevant, and with many consumers now relying heavily on Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud and SkyDrive, are we going to see an increase in Chromebook-esque devices which all-but omit the hard drive / flash storage?

You Will Soon Be Able To Comment On A Comment On Facebook Using The ‘Reply’ Button [IMAGE]

Paul Morris·November 10, 2012
With over one billion active users, there is no denying that Facebook is the largest social network on the planet, but if you compared the web based experience today with the experience that actually first launched with Facebook back in 2004 then it would be barely recognizable. Like any popular site or service, Facebook has evolved over time to meet increasing demand and has added - and sometimes removed - features that they believe will be beneficial to users. It seems that the latest addition to the social network could come in the form of a threaded comments system that stands a good chance of causing chaos on profiles if it gets through the user testing stage.

While a large portion of his professional life was entirely dedicated to finding Apple and then ultimately spearheading the company's resurgence from Silicon Valley obscurity, Pixar is attempting to ensure that his other career successes aren't forgotten by renaming their main building in honor of him.
