Signal Is Testing Payments That Support Sending Crypto To Friends

Signal has announced a new feature that will allow people to send cryptocurrency to their friends. It’s currently only in the testing phase, but it’s set to roll out to everyone else eventually.

Called Signal Payments, the feature will only support MobileCoin wallets and the companion cryptocurrency MOB. Signal says that it won’t have access to any of your payment details or balance, however.

Signal Payments makes it easy to link a MobileCoin wallet to Signal so you can start sending funds to friends and family, receive funds from them, keep track of your balance, and review your transaction history with a simple interface. As always, our goal is to keep your data in your hands rather than ours; MobileCoin’s design means Signal does not have access to your balance, full transaction history, or funds. You can also transfer your funds at any time if you want to switch to another app or service.

The feature is now live for those who are in the UK and part of the Signal beta. Assuming all goes well we’d expect it to be a feature that goes live for everyone eventually. That’s the point behind running these kinds of tests, after all!

Signal is just the latest platform to add some sort of payment mechanism and it surely won’t be the last, either.
