Second-Gen Sonos One Speaker With Upgraded Internals Launched, Gen 1 Discounted

Sonos has taken the unusual step of refreshing its Sonos One speaker with upgraded internals, although there are no design changes whatsoever. That means that to look at the pair, they’re identical.

Inside, things are quite different, however. There’s support for Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) as well as an improved processor and more memory. That will make the speaker more responsive, especially when using digital assistants like Alexa.

Interestingly, there are no changes to the way the Sonos One sounds, with both the older and newer models apparently offering the same sound quality. Sonos is selling it at the same $199 price, with the older model being discounted and offered for $179. The older Sonos One will be available at the discounted price at select retailers and, we’d argue, may be the better deal.

No matter which of the two Sonos One models you get, you’ll get support for AirPlay 2 and such, which makes this a pretty great speaker even before you throw in the Sonos-specific features that make them so popular among audio fans.

The move to improve the internals is more a move to future-proof the speaker for additional features that are in the pipeline rather than add anything right now, so depending on whether that’s important to you or not, you may want to opt for the newer model. We’re not sure which side of that fence we fall on, so we’ll leave the buying decision to you. No matter which you go for, we don’t think you’ll regret your purchase.
