Remember those leaked SkyDrive features I touched on in yesterday's editorial? Well, much of them remain in rumor territory. However, Microsoft has confirmed two things: One, a major SkyDrive update is in the pipeline, and two, the rumor that we're getting a SkyDrive desktop client is spot-on. In a Building Windows 8 post written by two SkyDrive program managers, Microsoft detailed the SkyDrive Metro app, the service's tight integration with Windows 8, SkyDrive on the desktop, and fetching files through SkyDrive.com.
June 2007 will always go down as a momentous month in smartphone history due to the fact it marked the launch of the original Apple iPhone which set about a total change in the mobile industry. The following year saw the launch of the iPhone 3G pushed back a month until July with the next two releases of the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 both following the original launch date, and coming in the month of June.
Apple is getting a nice dose of its own medicine these days in the form of lawsuits from folks like Motorola and, more recently, the Chinese Shenzhen Proview Technology company. Jailbreaking iOS devices opens it up to a whole new world of apps and tweaks that let you customize your device to make it look and work the way you want it (and not how those folks up at Cupertino decide it to). While there plenty of game-changing apps/tweaks out there, I feel that it’s the smaller ones - the one-trick ponies that change the way how one small aspect of your device looks/works like - that make things better.
The Cydia store contains a wide range of offerings from developers from all works of life. Some of the software in Cydia is uploaded by teenagers, some by indie developers, some by security researchers and some of the more professional pickings in Cydia are submitted by development houses who do this as a profession. One of those development houses is CocoaNuts, who are a small team of developers dedicated to creating tweaks for iOS which put powerful functionality in the hands of users.
The latest version of iOS - iOS 5 - packs some pretty nifty features that aren’t readily-available on other platforms such as Android. Apple is reportedly working on new ways to detect liquid damage in its devices, with an aim to cut down on the number of false warranty claims that are made by its customers.
Over the weekend, there were two leaks revealing that a major SkyDrive update is in the works. The first one revealed that SkyDrive will be offering three tiers of additional storage -- 20GB, 50GB, and 100GB upgrades to the existing 25GB for $10, $25, and $50, respectively, along with a desktop client for Windows and OS X -- and the second revealed that SkyDrive will be getting URL shortening, direct sharing to Twitter, an increase of the individual file limit to 300MB (on par with Dropbox), support for OpenDocument formats, and the ability to manage BitLocker recovery keys. All in all, a pretty major upgrade showing that Microsoft is taking its cloud file storage service seriously.
It was only a few weeks ago that we brought you the reinvention of the YouTube application for iPhone, as imagined by developer Jonas Gessner. ProTube for iPhone is available for purchase through the Cydia store and brings a number of features and additions which many feel should have been native in Apple’s stock implementation of YouTube.
