Samsung is having something of a bad time right now. Having already announced three consecutive quarterly drop in profits, the South Korean firm has announced that it expects a decline in profit of almost 60% for the third quarter of 2014 after having already warned that the second half of the year would 'remain a challenge.'
The past week has been relatively busy for Microsoft, with the grand unveiling of the all-new Windows 10 operating system, but while the upcoming OS will no doubt consume much of the company's time and resources over the next six or so months, it's not the only exciting product currently in the works from the software maker. In fact, Microsoft Research has been developing a much more compelling and innovative creation, which takes Smart Cover technology to a whole new dimension in terms of capabilities, and although the tablet industry is considerably fast-moving one as is, we're still particularly enthused about where this effort may eventually lead.
We've barely had time to recover from the hysteria that is the iPhone announcement and subsequent release, but Apple isn't standing still. Set to be announced during a special event on October 16th are two new iPads, with the iPad Air and iPad mini on the verge of receiving refreshes.
Google is constantly improving its famed Gmail client, and with the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus having recently been rolled out by Apple, the Gmail for iOS app has been given its customary update for optimization with the new display sizes. In true geek style, the release is numbered 3.1415926, or Pi, and we've got the rest of the details as well as the download link right here.
While most smartphone vendors release maybe half a dozen new devices per year, Samsung makes a habit of adding new handsets on an almost monthly basis, and with the Galaxy Note 4's launch still in progress, press renders of the Galaxy A5 suggests that it too is on the cusp of launching. The A5, which will apparently hit the market alongside two other 'A' devices, looks reasonably similar to the Galaxy Alpha that the Korean company introduced back in August, and as per leaked specs, it appears that the new series will target the mid-range market with decent specs and enticing price points.
It is clearly evident from the early sales figures that Apple's latest iPhone has resonated with the smartphone community. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch jumbo-sized iPhone 6 Plus are flying off bricks and mortar and digital shelves in every country they are available in, with the Cupertino company adding more territories weekly. Tim Cook's company has also acted quickly to put recent India based speculation to rest by issuing a press release to announce that both iPhone 6 models will be available in the South Asian country on October 17, with pre-orders becoming available even earlier.
If you're lamenting the loss of Launcher on iOS 8 following Apple's rather disappointing decision to pull it from the App Store, then Quick-Tap widget could be right up your street.
T-Mobile's outspoken CEO John Legere found himself on-stage at the GeekWire 2014 summit and once an interviewer made the mistake of asking whether his iPhone 6 Plus was bent, things got interesting. Waving his phone around in the air and with what can only be described as indignation in his heart, Legere set about putting the world to rights on the subject of Bendgate, calling the entire controversy nothing short of "bulls***."
Nothing captures the imagination more than a good leak of a prototype Apple device, except perhaps that device finding its way into the public domain. It has happened a handful of times in the past, most notably when an iPhone 4 turned up in a bar before it was announced. One thing you don't do when you get your hands on something like that is to try and sell it in a public forum, because that inevitably attracts the wrong kind of attention.
Smartphones are all the rage right now, and whether they're running Android Wear, Pebble's bespoke operating system or whatever it is that Apple has running on its Apple Watch, all are running a modern operating system that's designed to do the job. Whether it manages it or not is very much a matter of opinion.
