Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  2. @sghump. DO NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 3.1.3!! IT WILL UN-JAILBREAK YOUR iPhone AND THERE IS NO JAILBREAK FOR 3.1.3. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DOWNGRADE FROM 3.1.3.

  5. i tried with a 2.2.1 firmware and i didnt work also i tried a 3.0 firmware but it freeze's up……

  10. yes, everything will be there, you just have to run blackra1n. I will also sugest that you do a backup to be on the safe side.

    I was given an iPhone from a friend who is with Optus and the phone is locked to Optus.

    I am a Telstra customer and have tried to jailbreak and unlock the phone to no avail. Very frustrated!!

    I have checked the details on the iPhone and they are:
    Phone: iPhone 3g
    Software: 3.1.3
    Firmware: 05.12.01

    I have tried everything I have been able to find on the web (restoring settings via iTunes, Sn0wbreeze, Blacksn0w, Redsn0w, Ulrasn0w, Blackra1n). The phone has gone into recovery mode every time I have tried something and I've had to restore the settings all over again. Grrr….

    If someone could please let me know what to do to unlock this phone so I can use my Telstra account I would be really grateful…. Thanks in advance!!!

  23. u can jailbreak it but u can't unlock the iphone coz still there is no unlock release for 3.1.3 firmware 05.12.01 bootloader 6.2 have to wait until the unlock is released hop it going to come back soon………….

  25. snowbreeze and redsnow have something for 3.1.3 but very few people are having success with it better downgrade to 3.1.2 and use the solution above.

  26. have 3g 3.1.2 did jb with blackra1n…worked fine for 2 months. turned off last night b/c was running slow and now all i get is the black screen with the apple logo. held down home key and power key while plugging into computer and opened itunes..wants to restore, but wont that give me the new 3.1.3?? Opened blackra1n, made it rain, geohot pic came on phone, but never rebooted just went back to black screen with apple logo?? any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

  27. your battery might be dead… try letting it charge in the wall for like 30 mins or so then make it rain again…. DONT open itunes, and DONT restore, all you have to do it make it rain again and all of your jailbroken apps and contacts and texts and pictures will still be there…

  28. ok dude u bricked your ipod what u need to do is hold down the sleep and home button untill it turns off but dont let go keep holdin it until u see the apple logo then let go of the sleep button it should take you back to the screen u saw when u first bought the ipod if u did it right then when u plug it up it will say restor or start as new click start as new if not u will brick it with the same problem again

  32. i jailbroke my ipod touch 3.1.2, and everything works perfectly, but when i turn off the ipod and try turning it on again, it doesnt work, it goes to the “connect to itunes” thing. I know how to restore it without erasing anything at all, but i dont wan2 be doing this everytime i run outta batterry or wan2 turn my ipod off. help??

  36. I have a 3GS which was on 3.1.2 firmware, unlocked and being used on T-Mobile I dont know what the bootrom or baseband is. This was fine and Blackra1n worked when ever I needed to use it. That is until the battery went flat. Ever since I have not been able to jailbreak it. Blackra1n either freezes and re-boots the iphone, or is blackscreen.

    I have tried all the suggestions that I have found on forums countlees times, but to no avail. In terms of 3.1.3 firmware upgrade, when it asked, I said no, so I cant understand why blackra1n wont work. I have not restored the phone, as I know that the firmware will upgrade automatically. I cannot access the springboard at all.

    Essentially I now have a very expensive paperweight. does anyone have any suggestions? (apart from getting a phone that isnt an iphone?)

  37. Just put download your original 3.1.2 firmware restore it with itunes and the use blackra1n you situation about jetting off and having it without jailbreak is normal on this firmware so don't worry!

  40. jail broke both our iphones when they went flat afetr charging them tried to turn them on and now when they try to load they get stuck and just freeze up so they are stuffed tried master reset doesnt work dunno wat else to do n e suggestions??

  46. it isnt actually up-to-date enough to jailbreak 3.1.3, trust me i mistakedly updated to the new update and now im stuck waiting anxiously for blackra1n to be able to jailbreak my ipod… if you cant wait then there are programs for downgrading the update but none are very reliable.

  47. Apple made the new up date, 3.1.3, to counter all the unlocking of the iphones and if you unlock an iphone at that update it will crash in the process. Basically, now you own a digital box that won't do anyting untill someone figures out how to counter the update. Downgrading is also blocked by the update.

    I have an iPhone 3GS. It was on firmware 3.1.2 and jailbroken. Accidently upgraded to 3.1.3 firmware, and now when I try to downgrade to 3.1.2, iTunes says: “The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be restored. The device is not eligible for the requested build” or something like that. If anyone knows how to fix this problem I'd be extremely grateful. If anyone knows a link to 3.1.2 firmware that actually works, that would be good too.
