Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. ok so i downloaded black rain closed out all itunes connected the iphone and clicked maske it rain it goes to original iphone recovery and screen goes black but is still lite and goes no further what am i doing wrong

  3. Ok so I have had my phone unlocked with blackra1n for a while now and not a problem to speak of. Then the last few days my phone started to freeze up and I would lose my carrier for a while… I had been just leaving it sit and after a minute or 2 it would go back to working but today it sat for almost 45 mins with nothing. So I held down both buttons to reset since holding down the power button did nothing, it restarted but now when I turn the phone on it shows the apple for a while (like 5 mins) then shows the circle that comes up when its doing something over the apple for a good 3-5 mins and the screen then goes black, looks like it is booting up because it flashes (most of the screen) white, then goes back to just the apple and starts over the same process. HELP PLEASE!! I am extremely computer and Unix literate but am currently running WinXP and this is the laptop that I jailbroke it on. If anyone knows what to do or even has a suggestion please let me know.

  11. Hi guys, I've had my iphone 2G for 2 yrs now. Unlcked it with Ziphone to 1.1.4. Wanted to upgrade the software and tried with Ziphone 3.0 but after I did “prepare for upgrade”, my itunes (9.0) does not recognise my sim card any more!!! The msg I see is – The SIM card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported…..” I'm using a vodafone sim card in India and it was working perfectly well earlier. So my phone still shows the vodafone card and I can make and receive calls manually but can't access any of the programs or address book or sms etc etc. Also I have misplaced the oroginal AT&T sim card supplied along with the phone.   12. I had this problem when jailbreaking my touch. I’m running Vista, and found that if I followed “step 4” above it would hang like you said. Worked for me to uncheck the compatability mode, and run normal.

  13. i have just installed blackra1n on my iphone 3gs running 3.1.2 and everything was working fine i had rock and cydia working fine, then when i installed winterboard it told me i required a reboot so i rebooted my i phone, and as it was starting up it just goes straight to recovery mode is there anyway to get around this? thank you.

  16. u need to go to ur last page and find blackra1n… or check on settings then about and check wat versoin u have and u need 3.1.2 to get the blackra1n app on ur ipod/iphone…plzz reply if u still have problems

  17. when u download blackra1n go to last page of ur ipod/iphone and u probably might see it and if it still doesnt come out u might have to go to settings then about and c wat version u have and if u have 3.1.2 then something might b wrong wit ur ipod/iphone but if u have an older version then u will have to upgrade to the latest version of itunes… if still u have questions u can email me at salazarivan13@yahoo.com

  19. no… technically the technology is “not available” on the iPhones yet because at&t and apple have not come to an agreement on how to monitor/charge the usage which means a jailbroken iPhone using tethering is included in the $30 per month smartphone data charge

    once they come to an agreement it will probably cost anywhere from $30-$60 more for tethering (but i imagine you can still use the jailbroken tethering at no extra cost)

  20. Hey guys. I unlocked my phone everything worked great then all of a sudden my wifi stopped working. It will not pick up any wifi network. I reset my entire phone and reloaded jailbreak etc. Wifi worked to download blackrain, snow,etc and then just stopped working again. HELP pls

  24. Hey guys I just I unlocked my 3Gs a few days ago. Everything went fine for a little while. Then all of a sudden My iphone would not pickup any WiFi any where. I reset my Iphone reloaded it and the same thing. No wifi Can anyone help fix this. Tks

  25. this is a common problem when u upgrade to 3.2.1, i heard somewhere that in some iphones it damages the wifi and you have to send it back.

  26. there is nothing you can do as right now, all you can do is not to turn it off and if happens just connect it and run black-rain that will fix it. if you need to silence the iphone just use the airplane mode so you do don’t have to turn it off.

    You just plug your jailbroken iPhone back into the usb port and run the blackra1n program again, it’ll tell you “done, waiting to reboot device”. Once you see the image of “geohot” on your iphone, then unplug the usb cable, and start using it again.

  28. Hey i bricked my 3gs while i was jail breaking it, when the geohot photo was on my screen it just got stuck in a loop and wouldnt get out of it i tried to restrt the phone nut no luck.. I HAVE ALSO TRIED TO PRESS HOME + SLEEP KEY BUT NO LUCK I CANT GET IT TO GIVE ME THE CORD AND ITUNES PAGE the phone is litterlly dead for the past two days i have been all over the web and youtube for a solution with no luck, i have a legit o2 plan and phone what can i do ???

  29. Take iTunes off of Auto sync, plug your phone into your ‘puter, re-boot, and start blackra1n from your ‘puter. blackra1n will complete the boot. Not sure why, I just know that it does. I did not used to hafta do this, but, now I do.

  31. Go to settings > general > rest > reset network settings

    That should fix your wifi make sure your GPS and youtube are working correctly as well. I just used blackra1n on my 3g a few days ago and my GPS is not working correctly. I’ve looked for fixes but none have really worked. Good luck.

  32. dude ur all n00by. READ THE TOP! if ur ipod/iphone goes into recovery mode, just run blackra1n again. easiest shit in the world. now i just gotta find out how to update my 3gs to v3.1.3 without losing jailbreak :S

    GO to Setup, networks and reset the network settings it works.
    if not, please install application called cwifi from istore, then using this application connect to your wifi, after rebooting your standard wifi works. (This is what I too did to solve the sam eproblem in my case)

  34. Hi, Yes for the new iphones (made after October 2009) this problem is there. As of now the solution is connect to PC, execute Blackra1n again. your phone will be bcak in position with all data as it was. as of now most of the people are looking for permanent solution for this problem. the best is dont power off as of now. you can use plane mode On and OFF for offline work.

    Like, its stuck at that black screen, and when i do the power+home button thing, it just tries to install it again.
    It keeps saying blackra1n was a success, but i cant find it.

  38. you need to download installous go on cydia n type in the search bar installous install it n you will b able to find any app from the app store der for free

  39. before u give it to apple restore it on ur computer, if it doesnt do anything, do it again. i waited for an hour and it did nothing, but i clicked it again and it restored in 5 min.

  42. in the blackrain app, download cydia. In cydia, you'll find a whole bunch of different apps, or themes.

  46. well i have a problem withmy iphone well i installed blackra1n on my phone but i went in to it and pressed without installing the stuff in in blackra1n. and went back on my iphone and it wasnt there no more i backed up my files on my phone and tryed to install it again but it wouldnt show up ( the blackra1n app) so decided to erase everything on my phone. after i did imy phone said i have no service. i tryed to jailbreak it again but it still would not come up,so i put all my back up stuff back inand it still said no service wat do i do ireally need some help!!!

  49. Hey i have a prob with my iPod Touch 3rd gen 32 gig. It auto updated while i had it charging and its now up to 3.1.3 firmware. I tried using blackra1n and it keeps saying that it has installed it onto the iPod and it was sucessful but when i look on my iPod it isnt there. Where is it and what am i doing wrong?
