Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  11. dont restore it just open up blackra1n and download it like u did be4 and your ipod will unbrick and u will have everything you had and it will only reboot when battery runs out so keep it charged!and if it reboots again do the same thing with blackrain over and over every time it reboots it will be like its not even tethered good luck!

  15. hey i had cydia befor but not blackrain and my ipod was 3.0 and i accidentaly upgrate it to 3.1.2and cydia and installous desapered.. can i do this process agian or my ipod will damage! pliiiz i lose all my apps!

  21. i have tried this many times, and it has worked but everytime i turn my phone off, or it dies and i plug it in to itunes it says i have to restore my iphone to factory setting, and i have done this like 5 times and it just keeps happining, wat can i do???

  24. HAHA! Thee Fastest Jailbreak I've ever saw! Haha! Recovery mode stuck for a few minutes, restarted blackra1n and it jailbroke my phone in 1 second!!!

  28. u have to push the home botten and the the botten on top that turns ur ipod on at the same time untill it restarts then try jailbreaking again. keep trying by doin the same thing a few times if it dosent get past recovery mode.

  30. Help please! I tried to jailbreak my ipod touch 2g, ran blackrain but it got stuck in the entering recovery screen. Do i have to have itunes running???

  35. First, let me just say thank you Taimur for this article! It is the easiest to follow of any jailbreaking tutorials out there!

    So, I’m using a 3G with 3.1.2 and have no problem with the jailbreak or unlocking….but I have had to restore it 3 times now. It keeps freezing up on me.

    This time I am going to try it without some of the apps I downloaded in the last two times I did it, but is there maybe a more significant problem I am having than simply too many or corrupted apps??

  36. hie everibody…i need some help plz…after i install the last fv 3.1.2 and blackra1n on my iphone,i see in some tutorial appear the option with the install of sidya and rock…but on my iphone appear “pleaze check your internet connection. Err…”…if i go in a place with wirless connection it must be connect with my pc?or i can take the iphone and intall it?
    what i must do?plz help me

  38. My phone has been jailbroken for 3 weeks. Today it went into ” Safe Mode” saying the springboard crashed. I hit the reboot on the pop up but nothing happens. Any help?

  39. Hi, very happy with this jailbreak tool, just one question. Each time I switch off my iPhone and restart it, I am back to the iTunes connection symbol and need to run the blackra1n again? Is this really necessary and can I fix this? Thx

  41. YAY jailbroke my iPod Touch 1G with 3.1.2 😀
    For the ppl who had the problem of blackra1n getting stuck at “Entering Recovery..” on Vista, try unchecking the compatibility mode and admin mode. Worked like a charm after I did that.

  43. I jailbroke my Iphone 3gs like an hour ago. I was messing with it trying to figure everything out when my phone shuts off. The apple logo appears on the black screen but it never powered on. I have tried everything to get it past this screen but it wont do anything but show the apple icon. can anyone help?

  44. You guys should know that after you jailbreak you cant switch off your iphone,if you turn it off you would have to jailbreak it again to switch it on again.

  45. !!! I’m pretty techno-dumb and my brothers have always jailbroken my iphone for me when I needed them to, I’ve been trying for several hours to do it myself with 4-5 tries, no luck, and this was such a breeze. Literally 30 seconds.

    i jailbroke my ipodtouch 2G about two months ago ..
    i didnt restore it but it still worked

    today , i updated to the ipod 3.1.2 software
    ( not knowing that it would delete cydia , rock , my theme , font , etc )
    i just redownloaded blakra1n ..
    but when i turned my ipod on ..
    i couldnt find the app ( like in step 7 , second picture )

    please help !
    what did i do wrong ?
    and is there another simple was for me to download cydia , rock and my other themes .. ?

  48. i beleive most people use cydia
    – because it has more themes and etc.
    but i guess it depends on what you want to download ..

    download both and experiment with which one you like better !

  50. I ran blackrain and all that happened is my 3gs (Ver 3.1.2) gets stuck in recovery mode and took 3 hours to rebuild.
