Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. I GOT THE NEW IPHONE 3GS WITH 16GB VERS 3.1.2 LAST WEEKEND WITH THE 2 YEAR ATT SERVICE CONTRACT. I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS HERE TO JAILBREAK. ALREADY HAD ITUNES SYNC'ED TO MY IPHONE. I DOWNLOADED THE FIRMWARE 3.1.2 & INSTALLED IT. I THEN DOWNLOAD BLACKRA1N AND CLICKED MAKE IT RAIN! NO PROBLEM, BLACKRA1N ICON SHOWS ON MY IPHONE AFTER REBOOTING. HOWEVER, WHEN I CLICK TO DOWNLOAD & INSTALL CYDIA, I GET A DOWNLOAD ERR MESSAGE EACH TIME I TRIED. I, EVEN WENT BACK & RESTORE THE IPHONE AFTER DOWNLOADING FIRMWARE 3.1.2 & STILL GET THE ERR MESSAGE WHEN DOWNLOADING CYDIA. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? PLEASE HELP.

  2. Didnt work for me, everytime I clicked “Make it rain” it puts my iphone into recovery mode but iTunes says I have to restore my phone before I can do anything and that stops BlackRa1n from working… help please

  5. Make sure your wifi is on. i had the same problem cydia was not downloading while on 3g, turn your wife and try to download cydia.

  6. N1, worked very nice.

    But i have one problem with this programm.
    If i want to reboot my phone, i have to start blackrain and “make it rain”, instead of i couldn´t start my phone.

    Is there anything i have forgotten by “jailbreaking” my phone???

  8. hey guys. I actually couldnt jailbreak it. And I have to put my fone in Recovery Mode in order to make the Blackrain working… so my fone is jailbroken.
    however, anytime i restart my fone, the image of “connecting ur ifone to itunes” appear, and Itunes opens up on my desktop, saying “u have to restore ur fone to continue”… And i have to jailbreak again…
    can anyone help me to fix this???

  12. I am trying to jailbreak my 3g running 3.1.2 and Blackra1n isn' working properly. When i click ” Make it Rain ” it puts my phone into recovery, but I get the connect to iTunes screen instead of the Geohot picture and when I reboot Blackra1n isnt installed, any help would be appreciated.

    at the top of the pop-up, hover to and select Compatibility, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and choose “Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”
    The, Ok to exit.
    This works for me

  18. Please Help!!!!! I’m new at the jailbreak process and have successfully Jailbroke my iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 using windows vista 32bit. I’m not sure if this is normal but after doing the jailbreak I power off (reboot) and it always goes to the DFU mode showing the iTunes and the usb cable. I believe this is in recovery mode and when iTunes opens up it says that I need to restore to factory settings. I did this the first time and had to do the jailbreak all over again. I then figured that when that screen comes on I close iTunes and make it rain again and everything I did and installed is still there. Now, do I have to make it rain everytime the device reboots or the battery wastes and it powers off? Like I said I don’t know much about this so if someone can help me understand what to do or show me what I’m doing wrong it will be greatly appreciated.   19. well i started looking into this just a few hrs ago, and then i tired it on my friends ipod touch 16g, and he was on 3.1.2 ( same as my iphone 3gs) and it worked. after some more reading and wondering i did my 3gs and well it worked, i need to get some money to gather and i plan to make a donation

  21. I am using iTunes 9.0.2.25. When I select “make it rain” the phone goes into recovery but never shows the blackra1n splashscreen or indeed automatically reboots. I've tried using it on another computer without iTunes installed and all works perfectly. Both computers are running XP SP3. I think this may be a bug as I tried it several times and re-read the instructions countless times in case I was missing something.

  22. I was right about to post about the EXACT same problem (on iphone 3GS 32gig 3.1.2) to see if anyone has any suggestions. The only difference is that I am running Vista 64bit (but I don't think that matters). It also asks me if I would like to update my carrier settings every time I plug in and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Not sure if you have that issue as well.

    Can anyone please post any suggestions here so that other people with the same issue will know how to resolve it as well? Thank you!

Hi I'm having the same problem as other on here where i can jailbreak with no problem and i install Cydia and Rock and i can start downloading apps but when i turn my phone of it asks me to reboot!! i've had to do this 4 times now. Can anyone help as there seems to be a lot of people here having the same problem.

    I ran the make it rain and it looked okay showed me my play list then went to must restore over and over again. Let me know if there is a fix. Thanks

  28. i just got it …was really happy about it it was like 30 seconds haha….but now i just have these icons on my home screen : youtube, weather the voicerecorder …..where are all the other icons gone??? like music itunes properties ect.?

  30. had same problem with my iTouch. What i did was the following:

    – updated my itunes
    – restored it to 3.1.2
    – plug into the BACK of my PC
    – CTRL ALT DEL > task manager and turned off iTunesHelper.exe
    – It says that for Vista you should make it run on “Windows XP mode”..i tried with that and it wouldnt work. So this time i just ran it without it (ive got Vista 32bit).

    And it worked!

  31. Jailbreak worked for my new 3.1.2 …until I turned my phone off and realised i'm in safe mode, then see I need to reconnect to itunes each time I turn on my phone….same deal as many. Any advances anyone? Anyone tried redsn0w?

  32. no you dont when it turns off when you click make it rain just leave the ipod and it will reboot and turn itself back on it will then turn back on with black rain

  33. hi guys there are some blackra1n software out there that do not work then i found a copy that worked instant & i do mean instant! if you get a itunes usb picture that stays there it did not load. press home key & power button like this home power home power home power home power then hold both buttons in till screen flashes then goes black its now restarting. i paid a donation for my copy mac & windows so if you want a copy i can send it to your email & for that can you donate some money to paypal & ill help you further my email is rs1900td@yohoo.co.uk

I've jailbroken my 3GS iPhone that was/is running Version: 3.1.2 and everything worked great EXCEPT that I had NO SERVICE with which to make or receive or anything call related… Going to try again but if the same things happens, what's the solution? I've tried some things found on this is but nothing worked.

  42. does it really take long to download the sn0w program? mine has already 15min and its just loading…any one knows how long it takes for sn0w to complete the session?

  43. worked just fine for me. My wife plugged in my already unlocked 3.0 phone into my PC, itunes zapped it..This prog unlocked it in 3 minutes..Bad Azz prog.
    But, 1st, if you want to do what it says, plug ya phone into itunes, restore it, THEN run the blackra1n prog. It's that simple. This dude is a genius.

  45. follow the directions. Hook up ur phone, turn on itunes, restore the phone to new 3.1.2 THEN launck blackra1n. DUH.
    you may need to contact ( in my case, tmobile) for the proper settings–mms)

  50. Since I unlocked my iphone I have had trouble with dropped calls. Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?
