Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

blackra1n

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  13. Did you try to run Blackra1n when your device was already in DFU mode? If yes, you need to exit DFU by pressing home and power button for at least 10 seconds. Wait for reboot, then restore your device with iTunes. Leave your device turn on and then follow all the steps above. I hope this will help.

  28. hey thanks! worked like a charm… in 60 seconds the root folder was accessible, and I had access again. I found out how to do it the hard way by wirelessly accessing my phone from a windows program, but it took me a few hours to stumble through… this was effortless. nice work!

  29. I've been trying to get this to work for a couple days now. I've used several different computers and operating systems, the closest i got was on on XP machine. It would go thru the whole process and say “Done, wait for reboot” and “Your jailbreak is done once your iPhone reboots, etc etc”. However, the phone never reboots and if i reboot it manually there's no blackra1n software installed, anyone ever resolve this issue?

  30. thats all my iphone 3g is doing and then it just turns off but i am able to turn on as normal and there is no blackra1n software on the iphone. have you figured it out yet??

  31. If you're stuck on the “iTunes icon & USB” screen. Try again but now kill the process iTunesHelper first, then connect phone, start balckra1n and voila. Worked for me.

  32. Hold your power button and home button for 6 seconds.
then let go of the power button but still hold the home button,

  33. I just bought an iphone 3g on Sunday, not knowing a whole bunch about itunes, I downloaded the update to make it 3.1.2, I'm planning on returning my iphone for the 16 gig rather than the 8 gig, would it bennifit me in any way to keep it in it's original format rather than updating my new iphone through itunes? I plan on jailbreaking in the near future once i learn more about it. Also, can anyone tell me if blackra1n is the only jailbreak for the 3.1.2?

  34. Once iphone is jailbroken with blackra1n, can anyone tell me if app store will still function normally?

  35. It seems everyone is having problems with iPod Touch and iPhone 3G and 3GS… has anyone had luck with this with an iPod Touch 2G?

  36. Not true!! I Jailbroke last night It took me a few tries but it does work. For vista users leave blackrain on the desktop, Do not change to compatability mode to xp! Restore the iphone, make sure itunes is closed down as well as itunes helper right click on blackrain run as admin… Then plug in the iphone and then make it rain.. Took me like ten tries to figure out but this is what worked for me on the iphone 3GS with 3.1.2

*Note* Right click on blackrain check properties in the general tab make sure the program is not blocked.. if it is click unblock and apply.
