Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. this thing is great took me LESS THAN A MINUTE NOOOO JOKEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! turn off automatic sync on itunes when u click on ur iphone or touch in the side bar and then press apply and then close it and then press ctrl alt delete and go to processes tab and end the ituneshelp process and then open black rain and wait!!

  2. I have a brand new iphone 3gs which came with the 3.1.2 firmware alreagy installed.
I have read multiple threads about the necessity of “restoring” the firmware to 3.1.2 and I have done that several times.
I have also tried the methods for downgrading the firmware to 3.1.1 or 3.0.1 and none of these work. iTunes just tells me that the firmware version is not valid.
I have tried all combinations of running the blackra1n app. I am in Vista 32 bit. I've tried with and without xpsp2 compatibility, with and without itunes open, with and wwithout administrator rights….
    No dice!
Is there something about really new systems which come with the 3.1.2 firmware already installed? Does the blackra1n app neet some tweeking?
    HELP!!!
all of this came about because I just wanted to get the ridiculously priced tomtom app for free! Now I have become obsessed with making this work!
I know it can't be that hard!
Help my stupid white ass make it happen!
    Taboo….

  3. my iphone 3g 3.1.2 is stuck on itunes usb screen pleaz help pleaz any one help help me its.. oh my god. help

  4. Worked fine for me, get rid of the automatically sync when connected so it does not interfere with Blackra1n and that will do it ! Great job guys !

  5. dont stress it hapens sometimes when your iphone is too full (used all space). just go on itunes and click restore. no problem. and if that doesnt work you should try another version like 2.1(press shift and restore)

  6. I had problems with Vista at first but after reading thru comment from others in here I got it done, here's a recap ( for Vista users only ) :-
    – copy 'blackra1n' to C:/
    – press 'ctrl+alt+del' and run 'task manager
    – end the process 'ituneshelper' as this prevents iTunes from lauching whne the phone goes into 'recovery mode'
    – do not run on compatablity mode ( just run it as downloaded )
    – run 'blackra1n'
    – click 'make it ra1n'
    – your iphone should be jailbroken in a matter of minutes

It worked for me so hopefully you guys will have the same success

  7. Hey everyone… NOTE THIS!
Blackra1n does not set up all applications into accessible file folders like redsn0w, and other JB methods. You can confirm this by using iPhoneBrowser (by Google) and it will not recognize the phone as jailbroken, says (no afc2 service found). Not sure what the impact is, but for me, it is significant, because I can't access my applications! Any ideas?

  8. right click on blackrain and check the compatibility mode, click the drop down menu and select win xp

  9. Works 100 %. I had iphone 3gs 3.1 out of the box, i upgraded to 3.1.2 using itunes. Shut down itunes and ran blackra1n on windows seven 32-bit without compatibility running, it entered reboot mode and installed and rebooted, itunes asked for a restore i just ended itunes task and waited for the iphone to reboot. It took exactly 2 minutes for the whole process and then i installed Cydia.

Anyone know how can i get installous on this iphone?`

  10. Mine is just stuck on the recovery screen…I hope something doesn't go wrong…

To add installous, add the source cydia.hackulo.us to cydia
    It'll show up under updates

  11. guys just make sure to end all itunes processes under the task manager, it only worked out for me when i ended the itunehelper process, cheers

  12. Easy jail break guys…Make sure you “restore and update” NOT just click the “update”. I did it before my coffee was done brewing 🙂

  13. mines just stuck on the USB screen but i have like 6 gb space left and can't go on itunes because i don't have the right simcard. help help help quick

  18. Ive tried this about 9 times and finally got it to work 🙂

X: If on vista dont worry about XP compatability mode.
X: Makes sure you copy the file from its location and paste it into the C drive.
X: Right click blackra1n and run as administrator (thats what did it for me)

  19. could use some help ! it says running and it is going alot longer than 40 secs

  20. well after following all the instructions and tried it several times ITS NOT WORKING ….i unchecked compatibility mode n after clicking make it ra1n it says running and nothing happens. Ituneshelper is terminated and just done a restore-update. P.S. Running 3g 8gb

  21. I installed backra1n and now my wifi doesn't work how can i re activate it
it is just faded out and says no wi-fi

  22. My iPhone is doing the same thing. I'm using Windows Vista. I copy blackra1n to C:, I make sure that the iTunesHelper process is not running and then run the program. It places the phone in recovery mode and then the blackra1n program says “Running” but the phone stays on the screen with the iTunes and USB. I still have over 6 GB of space left on the phone. I just simply hold down the power and home button so that the phone resets, so I'm good there, just can't jailbreak. HELP!!

  23. You have to run blackr1n first and then plug in phone for it to work) and turn off itunes help in task and restore iphone to factory and install back up before running blackra1n.best jailbreak yet works awsome and remeber to reboot phone after you unplug to update carrier single strenth before installing icy……….from blackra1n app.hope this helps good luck

Just followed the instructions as above and made sure itunes and itunes helped were shut down.

  27. it worked for me the first time without doing anything like ending ituneshelper and etc. My problem was that winterboard was not working and i think it has something to do with the fact that i installed cydia icy and rock….i then restored my phone to try to re jailbreak it and have not been sucessful,,,i have used all the tips and tricks i have read all over the internet regarding this jailbreak, does anyone have any suggestions? do you think its because it can only be jailbroken once?

  32. I noticed a new jailbreak app (in Cydia and Rock) called afc2add that’s supposed to fix your problem. It’s in the standard ModMyi.com (apt.modmyi.com) source. I personally haven’t tried it though.

  33. i'm getting the same issue, everything goes fine, then it says “done, wait for reboot” and the screen stays black but obviously turned on, and blackra1n never appears on the iphone
