iOS 16 Duplicate Photos Detection Feature Makes Deleting Easier

Apple’s iOS 16 update was announced as part of the WWDC22 event’s opening keynote on Monday and while the company showed off a ton of new features, there are still some that we’re learning about a day or so later.

One of those is a new change that will make it easier than ever to delete duplicate photos and videos in the Photos app.

With iOS 16 installed people will notice a new Duplicates album that will play host to all of the images that iOS thinks are duplicates. It’ll use Duplicate Detection and machine learning to try and decide which images are alike, with initial testing showing that it works fairly well.

Once a duplicate has been found, Photos will give you the chance to “merge” them, which will effectively delete one of the duplicates.

Apple’s made the first iOS 16 beta available to developers who have been running it for almost a day at this point. A public beta program will also be made available to people next month, although no hard date for that has been set so far. We expect Apple to make the update available to everyone in or around September.

Apple announced iOS 16 alongside iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 with all of the updates all set to arrive around the same time this fall.
