Final Fantasy IX For iOS, Android And PC Announced By Square Enix [Video]

We can officially start the new year off with some great news for fans of mobile and PC gaming. Square Enix has announced that it will be bringing a remake of Final Fantasy IX to the iOS and Android platforms in Japan. There will also be an official PC version available for those who prefer to let Windows-based systems handle their gaming needs. Sixteen years after first launching on the original Sony PlayStation, the beloved 9th iteration of Final Fantasy will be back with a modern reboot for modern devices.

It’s highly likely that the modern remake of an iconic classic such as Final Fantasy IX will not only delight those who played the original title when we first hit a new millennium, but will also garner the attention of a whole new generation of fans who look to iOS and Android-powered mobile devices to meet their casual gaming needs. Those familiar with Final Fantasy IX, won’t be surprised to see that the storyline once again focuses on Princess Garnet of Alexandria and the imminent threat of her kidnapping by a theater troupe hired to entertain the masses for her birthday celebrations.

Square Enix, the publisher behind the modern remake and the official announcement, hasn’t offered up a great deal of information about what gamers can expect. Based on previous remakes it’s being speculated that gamers will get stunning HD graphics and gameplay designed for optimum performance on the devices that it supports. It’s also likely that additions like auto-save, achievements, and high-speed mode will be added to bring that modern-touch to the classic title. If the backdrop visuals on Square Enix’s website are anywhere near representative of the game’s graphics, then we’re truly in for a treat.

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy IX will be “coming soon” to devices in Japan. There has been no official mention of a release for the western markets such as the U.S. and Europe, but we can be sure that it will only be a matter of time till the release expands to other regions after it launches in Japan.

Final Fantasy IX will be compatible with iOS 7.0 and above, and Android 4.1 or later. However, the publisher does stipulate that it “may not operate” on certain Android devices even if the Android minimum dependency is matched.
