CES 2018 Announcements: Intel CPUs With Radeon Graphics, DJI Osmo Mobile 2, Anker Roav Viva, LG ThinQ Fridge, More

That’s right, folks – in so many ways, it feels like CES 2017 was just yesterday but that’s not how years work.

With CES 2018 now in full swing, we are being treated to all manner of weird, wonderful, and downright bad examples of what happens when you give designers and engineers too much time to work on whatever they like.

We do love CES time here at RP! As always, there is simply too much to cover in detail and, to be absolutely honest with you, not all of it deserves the attention. However, we don’t like the idea of you missing out on some of the gems that are being announced this time around, so below is where you will find a collection of announcements – all in handy bite-sized chunks. Let’s get started, shall we?

Intel Chips With Radeon Graphics

It’s not been a good couple of weeks for chip makers Intel and AMD thanks to the whole chip vulnerability situation, but at CES, all eyes are on the first Core i5 and Core i7 chips to incorporate Radeon graphics. The pair announced their intention to work together to ship Intel CPUs with AMD graphics processing built right in back in November, and now, the first chips to come out of that unexpected alliance have been announced. This amounts to two Intel Core i5 and i7 chips powered by discrete AMD Radeon RX Vega M GPUs, both tailored for use in laptop computers where power consumption and heat creation are big deals.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2, Ronin-S

Famous for making drones and cameras, DJI has announced a couple of camera stabilizers, with the Osmo Mobile 2 and Ronin-S being shown off. The former is designed for smartphones while the latter has DSLRs in mind, both reducing shaking and enabling users to film buttery smooth videos without the need for large rigs.

LG ThinQ Fridge

The idea of a fridge with a screen built-in is nothing new and they have been something of a staple of CES for a little while now. 2018 is no different, with LG announcing the ThinQ smart fridge with a transparent 29-inch touchscreen slapped on the front. That screen runs webOS, so there’s something for the geek in all of us to smile at right there. There’s support for Amazon’s Alexa, too, because everything has to support the lady in a tube these days. With all this magic, you can tag items with virtual stickers with food expiration dates attached, allowing for automatic reminders to be offered. Unfortunately, LG isn’t saying when it will be available, or how much it will cost.

New Ring Security Devices

Ring, the folks who brought us possibly the most exciting doorbell ever is back again, this time announcing a new line of home security kit. There’s the battery-powered Stick Up Cam that is a weatherproof camera designed to work in or outside, complete with two-way audio and a 1080p camera. There is also something called a Ring Beam that amounts to a smart light with a motion sensor built in, perfect for lighting a path at night. Oh, and there’s a professionally monitored home security system for those who want to keep their homes super-safe, but don’t mind the $199 price of the hardware and then the $10/month subscription fee.

Anker Roav Viva

We love Anker, we have said that plenty of times and now the accessory maker has announced a new plug-in device that will bring a plethora of Alexa capabilities to drivers. The $49.99 adapter connects to a car’s existing Bluetooth system and puts Alexa into a car while also giving users the ability to make and receive calls hands-free in a way they may not previously have been able to. It isn’t quite CarPlay or Android Auto, but the little adapter is potentially a great alternative for those who do not have cars compatible with such features.

New Tile Partnerships

Tile trackers are a great way to stop losing things like car keys and, well, kids, if needs be. The tiles are all well and good, but wouldn’t it be great to have the same functionality built directly into devices? That’s what a new series of partnerships promises, with companies like Bose announcing that their 2018 accessories will come with Tile built in. In the case of Bose, we can expect its SoundSport Wireless and QuietControl 30 headphones to ship this spring. Luggage firm Samsonite will also be working with San Jose International airport, among others, to allow Tile to prevent the loss of luggage during travel.
