Apple Launches Free USB-C Charge Cable Replacement Program For 12-Inch MacBook

Apple has today launched a new cable replacement program that allow individuals from across the globe to replace their 12-inch MacBook’s USB-C charging cable with one that comes with a new and improved design. The program stipulates that a limited number of Apple USB-C charge cables that were included with MacBooks through June 2015 have the potential to fail due to a design issue. “This program also covers Apple USB-C charge cables that were sold as a standalone accessory.” Issues range from a complete failure to charge the MacBook, or one where the machine would only charge intermittently. The program has been designed to swap those cables out for a more reliable solution.

This isn’t the first time that Apple has had to initiate a replacement cable program for a faulty charging or synchronization accessory. Of course, such is the nature and internal intricacies of these charging cables that things can occasionally go wrong. The real test of any company is how those issues are handled and put right to the benefit of the consumer. This latest replacement process shares information with the consumer on how to identify if the owned cable is one of the affected ones with the older design.

Affected cables carry the “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China” stamp across the white protective coating. The new, redesigned cables have the same text stamped across the white sheath, but also include an identifying serial number after the text. If the cable in your possession has the serial number at the end, then it’s the new redesigned cables that isn’t known to suffer from any performance issues. In that instance, it doesn’t need to be replaced unless it is damaged, but its still not covered by Apple’s free replacement offer.

To see if your cable is eligible for a free replacement, Apple is offering a number of options for those with an affected cable. Those with an affected USB-C charging cable can find a local retail Apple Store and book a Genius Bar appointment to avail this opportunity. While this is Apple’s recommended path, the company is also allowing consumers to visit an Authorized Apple Service Provider, or contact Apple Support directly for help. The offer is valid till June 8 2018.
