Apple has pushed out the new iOS 4.0.2 firmware for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G and iPod touch 3G / 2G. This new firmware is basically a security update which patches the PDF exploit used by JailbreakMe to jailbreak all iOS devices. Now if you care about your security, you can go ahead and update now but doing so will make your iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch 3G / 2G unjailbreakable until a new jailbreak tool is available.

The iPhone Dev-Team (Comex) has released JailbreakMe 2.0 (aka Star) which can jailbreak all iOS devices on their latest respective firmware like iOS 4.0 / 4.0.1. This does not work with iOS 4.1 Beta release. Since JailbreakMe 2.0 is a userland jailbreak, what this means is that you run it right in your iOS Safari browser to jailbreak the device. It cant get simpler than that !

Sn0wbreeze 1.7 for 4.0 (for Windows) has been released. This release supports iPhone 3GS (old and new bootrom), iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 2G (MC and non-MC models), and iPod touch 3G. Though iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC models) and iPod touch 3G will have to be either on 3.1.2 firmware, or will need to have their SHSH blobs saved for iOS 3.1.2 in order to successfully jailbreak these devices on iOS 4. Also the jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC models) and iPod touch 3G on iOS 4 will be tethered, which means whenever you turn off your phone, you will need to re-connect it to a computer to be able to turn it back on.

You will need a iPhone 3GS (with new bootrom) on iOS 4, which has SHSH blobs saved for iPhone 3.1.2. Some other important notes about the jailbreak are as follows.

iH8sn0w – the developer behind popular iPhone jailbreak tools such as sn0wbreeze for iPhone 3.1.3 / 4.0, f0recast and BlackBreeze has just written a detailed tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS (with new bootrom) on iOS 4. But as I mentioned earlier, there is a little catch to it. 1) it is a tethered jailbreak (whenever you turn off your phone, you will need to re-connect it to a computer to be able to turn it back on) and 2) it will only work for those devices which have their SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) files for 3.1.2 (NOT 3.1.3) saved on Cydia.

When iOS 4 jailbreak first came out, it was only compatible with iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC models). Things were even more trickier for iPhone 3GS. These 3GS devices were not only required to have old bootrom, but they were also required to have previously been pwned or jailbroken on anything (like blackra1n) other than Spirit.

The new Game Center which was available for testing purposes on pre-release GM version of iOS 4 was removed from the final public build which was released on June 21st. This was because Game Center was not ready for primetime use and so Apple rightly removed it from the final build. If you saved the Game Center files from iOS 4 GM build, you now can get it installed again on your jailbroken iOS 4 device.

There is a new modified version of PwnageTool floating around in the wild which promises to jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iPhone OS 4 Beta without upgrading the baseband. Apparently, an ex-Apple employee has managed to successfully jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iPhone OS 4 Beta. The redsn0w 0.9.5 jailbreak tool for iPhone OS 4 currently works on iPhone 3G only. The support for other iDevices will naturally follow once Apple releases iPhone OS 4 at WWDC. But KaatjeNL’s jailbreak method works on iPhone 3GS too. And the best thing about it is that it doesn’t upgrade your baseband, which means you can enjoy iPhone OS 4, fully jailbroken on the older baseband with an unlock using ultrasn0w.
