Whilst our iOS devices provide a novel way of playing music through the stereo, the rigmarole of getting up and traipsing towards it to skip those guilty Britney tracks can get pretty darn annoying; after all, we’re far too technologically advanced to be participating in such nonsense.
Of course, with Apple the dominant force in portable audio, many stereos are fitted with some form of iDevice dock as standard – usually accompanied by a remote control. However, this isn’t always the case, and if you’re simply looking for a little more boom via the auxiliary cable, you either have to buy a remote for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, or deal with having to constantly get up.
If you don’t fancy forking out for yet another pricey peripheral, help is at hand in the form of a free app entitled iKeyboardRemote. iKeyboardRemote is a Mac app which allows you to control the basic iPod functions from the comfort of your desktop. Utilizing the Bluetooth connection between Mac and iOS device, it is simple to setup, easy to operate, and best of all – free.
Once downloaded, iKeyboardRemote will walk you through the process of pairing your computer and your iOS device. Once the two are on the same wavelength, the media keys on the keyboard control playback. You can skip/play/pause/adjust volume et al. As it’s Bluetooth as opposed to Wi-Fi, the range isn’t particularly great, but it’s still a lot better than the manual route.
As mentioned, it’s free of charge and available to download from the Mac App Store. To be fair, even if your stereo does come with a remote, we reckon this little tweak could be of even more convenience at times when you’re camping at the monitor.
Unfortunately, this particular utility is Mac-only.
