How To Enable Free WiFi Tethering On Verizon iPhone

Mobile phone plans are never cheap at the best of times, but when we are paying through the nose for data costs then things can get even more irritating. As if that isn’t bad enough, most carriers also seek to get even more money out of us by charging fees to use our data as part of a tethering plan which, to most sane people, makes no sense at all.

Paying extra to use the data you already paid for can be downright maddening, which is why there are countless different jailbreak tweaks available for the iPhone which claim to make it possible to use a data plan and tethering together without having to pay the fee that goes with it. Unfortunately the downside here is that some of these tweaks need paying for themselves, such as MyWi and TetherMe, and even though in the grand scheme of things that cost is a drop in the ocean when compared with the ongoing cost of a tethering plan, not everyone agrees with it.

Which is why developer jimmyco2008 on Reddit has released a new bundle that allows users of iPhones to bypass their carrier’s tethering charges in order to use the data that they already paid for, and he has made it free as well, unlike the ones available from iTweakiOS. The downside? It only works on Verizon contracts which may be quite the kicker if you’re carrying around an iPhone that runs on a different carrier.

If Verizon is your provider and you have a jailbroken iPhone though, getting your free tethering on is a case of downloading a new carrier profile, installing a tweak via Cydia and then uploading your new carrier profile to the iPhone in question. There is some My Verizon jiggling to be done, but the end result should be worth the hassle.

Note: If you are already using paid solutions such as MyWi, TetherMe or iTweakiOS, you don’t need this carrier bundle mod. Also, this is limited to Verizon only.

Step 1: Download the modified carrier bundle from this link.

Step 2: Add the following repo in Cydia: apt.chinasnow.net and install the CommCenter Patch tweak.

Step 3: Pick up the modified carrier bundle you downloaded in step 1 and copy it to /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone. You may use iFile for this very purpose.

Step 4: Using My Verizon, enable the 4G Mobile Hotspot feature and verify that you have it enabled by going to Settings > Personal Hotspot on your iPhone.

Step 5: Now you need to hard reset your device. You can do so by holding down the power and Home buttons together for a few seconds till the screen goes blank. When you see the Apple boot logo, let go of the buttons. Repeat this step twice.

Step 6: Now, using My Verizon again, turn off the 4G Mobile Hotspot feature which you turned on in step 4.

Step 7: Go back to Settings and your Personal Hotspot option should be right there even with the 4G Mobile Hotspot feature turned off.

And that’s all there is to it!
