Tesla Adds iPhone UWB Support For EV Unlocking

Tesla as added support for the iPhone’s ultra wideband technology which means for better Phone Key support on cars that also support the technology. Those with an iPhone 11 or newer will be able to take advantage of the new feature.

The UWB support is part of the Tesla 2023.2.3 software update that was first reported by Not a Tesla App.

The company says that those with compatible vehicles and phones can upgrade their Phone Key within the Tesla app.

Ultrawide band (UWB) technology is now available for Phone Key. So your vehicle and Phone Key can communicate with greater accuracy to more responsively lock, unlock, and open Automatic Doors.

In the Tesla app, choose Phone Key > Upgrade and follow the instructions. After setup, keep your iPhone Settings for Nearby Interactions on for Tesla. Requires iPhone 11+ and Tesla app 4.29.5+.

Tesla vehicles with UWB support currently include the latest Model 2 and the 2023 Model X, while the Cybertruck is also on the list of supported vehicles.

The report also notes that “all refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles include the new UWB frequencies in the certificate of conformity” but right now support isn’t available for those EVs.

UWB support allows apps and services to know exactly where the phone and associated devices are and is the same technology that powers AirTags and similar location-finding accessories.
