If you’ve been following the news for the last few hours, you’re probably aware that the latest build of iOS 5, known as “Beta 4”, was seeded to developers. This is also the first ever version of iOS that can be downloaded over-the-air to iOS 5 Beta 3 devices, removing the need for iTunes to apply this update altogether. It now turns out that if you’ve jailbroken iOS 5, you won’t be able to update over the air.

According to a tweet posted by @MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev-Team, which has authored many jailbreak-related tools and tutorials, iOS 5’s new automatic over-the-air updates shouldn’t make jailbreaking harder.

If there is one area where Apple’s iOS still lags behind Google’s Android, it’s in the software updating process. As things stand today, eager updaters must first be informed that an update is available and then run off to plug their iDevice into a computer for iTunes to work its magic. Contrast this with the painless over-the-air nature of Android’s updates and it’s clear to see where Apple needs to be focusing its energy right now.
