Red Nexus 5 Press Image Leaks [Photo]

The Nexus 5 has proved to be a huge hit since its release late last year, and for a while, we’ve been under the impression that the LG-made, Google-branded handset would soon add a vibrant red color option. After numerous murmurings, we’ve now got something a little more plausible in the form of a press render, and considering the leaker – Evleaks – is renowned for accurate snaps and info on upcoming devices, we’re more than slightly inclined to believe this latest shot is the real deal. Check it out after the break!

It’s a common trait of the Android smartphone market to release a smartphone in one or perhaps two shades initially, and then follow up at regular intervals with assorted injections of color. Only yesterday, we saw Samsung introduce the Black Edition Galaxy S4, but if you’re looking for something that will stand out from the crowd, the red edition Nexus 5 is probably your guy.

Although Google may tweak one or two of the device’s aesthetics, it’s almost certain that the red model will be of the same specifications as the original. So the solid (albeit not mind-blowing) camera will feature allied to the gorgeous display, and with the latest, greatest Android KitKat 4.4 a nigh-on certainty, those purchasing the red Nexus 5 will still be getting a very premium experience.

There have been some murmurings recently that Google will discontinue the Nexus brand in the near future, instead releasing only special Google Play Edition versions of handsets made by different manufacturers. Whether there’s any truth in this remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – if the Big G does plan to stop making and releasing Nexus smartphones and tablets, it will be a sad day for the many millions who’ve come to admire the premium features offered at mid-range price points.

Still, let’s not get too sombre about something that mightn’t happen, and instead allow ourselves to get a little giddy about the red Nexus 5. Obviously, there’s no word on when exactly when it’s going to be announced or released, but we’d fully expect Google to come through with the details in the coming days.

And hey, with the tech industry seemingly joining in with the spirit of Valentine’s day – red is, after all, a very significant color for this time of year – perhaps the search giant will show us some love and drop the device in time for the 14th.
